KARIBA ANGLING SOCIETY
Junior/Beginners Booklet Online
Chapter Six

This chapter is "VERY  VERY" different to the book. There are areas where the web page will provide links to other on line publications, and may even interact with you.
(The revised booklet will become "similar" to this On line publication in the next version, eventually)

Definition of an Angler :-
A jerk on one end of the line, waiting for a jerk on the other end.
(OK, OK,  lets get on with it)

Species - Where and when
Because this is only a general guide to get people started in catching their quarry, the details given are the basics to think about and try, and do not cover all the species available in Zimbabwe.
If you need to know about the other species, then you should buy the book "Fishes of Zimbabwe", and read about them there. (You should have the book anyway, it would help you a lot)

If you read this carefully you will see that most of it is common sense, and you just have to think about it a little, and suddenly it will all fall into place, and you will find lots of spots for different species.

One of the main things about finding fish and various spots, is to use your eyes (a pair of Polaroid Sunglasses is a must), and ears, and you will be surprised at what you will find. Also a little reading about what you are trying to catch will help.

Bream Species (Not including Robbies)
There are four main species that dominate the catches of the general  anglers and these are :-
 a)Mellies - red belly bream
b)Mozzies or Kariba bream - Big mouth with Big Lips
c)Nilos' or Niloticus - Big bream small mouth
d)Happies - Pink coloured and look like Kariba Bream

Catfish Species
There are basically four catfish types to be caught in the dams of Zimbabwe and these are :-
 a)Barbel
 b)Vundu
 c)Silver Barbel
 d)Squeaker

Funnies
There are several species that only a few anglers fish for, as they are generally either not desirable or they are more difficult to catch, and these are :-
a)Cornish Jack
b)Bottlenose
c)Chessa
d)Nkupe

Predators
Generally many of the fish above are predators, but there a few specialist predators that can be found in our waters and these are :-
a)Tiger Fish
b)Robustus
c)Bass

Below is a selection of the different species that are covered (we can't do them all in detail, it would take too long and end up as a book).
Just move the cursor (arrow) over the one required and make sure that the picture of the fish that appears is what you want, and then click that title and the page will change to that species. (Not quite the same as the booklet Hey!)
