CURSE OF THE GONG

28.11.02                                                                                                                                       Previous Page          Next Page

The curse has struck!  Whoever win the manager of the month award would likely to have his team going through a bad period the following month.   It is happening to Liverpool now as it had happened to the Arse the previous month with both teams losing their unbeaten record.  Thus it seems better not to win the award and hope another team do slightly better than you?!

Who do you think will get the Gong for November?  No brainer, right?  It has got to be our neighbours across Stanley Park!  My colleague was asking me why the Toffees are doing so well at the moment.  So I looked at the 6 games that they have won recently and concluded that they have not faced the crunch yet.  The 6 teams they have won are:  Arsenal, Blackburn, Leeds, West Ham, West Brom and Charlton.

Most of us have watched the Arsenal game and would agree that Everton played well.  But Arsenal did not deserve to lose but for the curse of the Gong from a wonder goal by Rooney!  Rooney followed up with a stunning goal against Leeds, who has not been doing well at all this season.  Blackburn was beaten as they were still suffering from aftershock at the exit of the UEFA cup.  The other 3 teams? Save you breath!

The Toffees will meet the Magpies this weekend and Chelsea next weekend.  Apologies to Soaring Magpies as I think Everton would still win the game, probably at 1-0 again!  Although David Moyes is likely to get the gong this month, I think that he would win the first match in December just like Arsene Wenger and GH.  Remember Everton beat Newcastle in the “Worthless” (but most Liverpool fans, including myself, like to think it is still worthy) Cup?  Everton, with their confidence sky high, could do it again.  However, the curse should kick in next against Chelsea, who would be loathed to see Everton above them and Ranieri would certainly use this to motivate his team.

Back to Liverpool and team confidence is probably at a season low now with us out of the Champions’ League and losing 2 of 3 EPL matches in November.  The last game in November would be tonight against Vitesse Arnhem.  Vitesse what?  Why are you so disrespectful?  It was Sander Westerveld’s team before he joined us and Westerveld is sitting pretty at the top of the Spanish League now!

Does GH regret selling him as the Dude looked edgy recently?  No!  All Liverpool fans should not doubt him as this happens to all great goalkeepers.  Do you remember Slur Alex giving the red nose a break during the season when he was making errors?  Some people, or so-called experts, have called for Kirkland to step in.  Not yet, I think!

Dudek has done consistently well with more than 20 clean sheets for the past year until recently.  Although he has made mistakes, he should not be solely responsible for the poor results.   Hyppia has somehow lack his usual composure with Henchoz not around, albeit Traore performing admirably with increasing confidence each game he played.  Right back should belong to Markus but we need to give him time as his game fitness is not there yet.  He has provided us with an attacking option from the right evident from his performance at Sunderland.  I would like to see either Carragher or Vignal at left back as they have better defensive capabilities than Riise, who is more adept at left midfield with his attacking thrust.  Thus you can see here that we do not have a stable back four compared to previous seasons.

The midfield problem is well documented with Stevie G’s form.  Glad to hear that GH announced that he has seen the good Stevie back.  Let’s hope he does well tonight against Vitesse.  Hamann should take a rest from his World Cup exertions as he has not been as influential lately.  I would like to see Murphy attacking more as he often create panick among the opposition defence when he is up front helping the strikers.

Talking about strikers, nope, we are not talking about Heskey!  He has not played as a striker this season.  How can he score only 1 goal in 13 league games!  Don’t forget that he took 19 games to break his duck last season!  It must be GH’s fault to play too defensively from the Barcelona match 2 seasons ago and thus Heskey has forgotten that he is a striker.  Heskey has been played at the left wing, shouldn’t this role be left to Riise, Smicer, Berger or even Murphy?  He should be challenging the opposition defenders for crosses into the box instead of crossing them in with Owen leaping, although Owen does have a good leap and scored some wonderful headers.  GH, if you are not playing Heskey as a striker, give the chance to Baros!  He has helped to make and score the goals at Fulham and has been the striker on form.  We need to score otherwise how do we win?  Hence, we should not put the blame solely on the Dude as the whole team including GH have not been performing.

One last game for November, and the curse may still be there…..  I would go for a 1-1 draw with Heskey, ooops, Baros scoring for tonight’s game against Vitesse away.

I will be back for the big match this Sunday!  You don’t know who we are playing against?  You are not a Liverpool fan!
