We have lots of suggestions for learning your weekly spelling words!  The most important suggestion is to spend a little bit of time each day studying rather than spending a long time studying on Thursday night. Here are some ideas:

1. Fantastic Online Spelling Practice - Click on this link to go to a great website where you can input 10 spelling words at a time. Go to the Main Menu and choose Look and Say for online flash cards, Cover and Check to practice the words, Print Flash Cards to print out a set of flash cards, or Review and Assess to
test yourself. These activities can help anyone become a Spelling Superstar!

2.
Shaving Cream Words - Put a dollop of shaving cream on a cookie sheet, Styrofoam tray, cutting board, or right on your kitchen counter. Use your finger to trace each word in the shaving cream.

3.
Colorful Words - Use two different color pens to write your words. Use one color for consonants and another color for vowels.

4.
Memory Game (Concentration) - This is a great way to practice with Mom, Dad, Grandma, a brother or sister, or a friend. Make two cards for each spelling word (blank index cards work great). Spread out the cards word side down and flip over two at a time, trying to make pairs. The player with the most pairs wins!

5.
Finger Tracing - Use your finger to spell out your words one letter at a time on Mom or Dad's back. When you are done tracing, they must say the word and spell it back to you. Once you've finished all of your words, it is time to switch and let your partner finger trace the words on your back!

6.
Telephone Code - Write your words normally. Then write them again in "telephone code" by writing the number value for each letter as it appears on the buttons on your telephone. Give the letters q and z a value of 0 if they don't show up on your telephone.

7.
Paint Your Words - Go outside with a paintbrush and some water and paint your spelling words on your porch, driveway, sidewalk, or other place your parents say is okay. If it is rainy, stay indoors and paint your words on paper using watercolors.

8.
Sing Them Loud, Sing Them Soft - Have your Mom or Dad sing (or chant) the letters of a spelling word to you in a loud voice. You echo the spelling back in a soft voice. You can change this activity to sing high and low, or sing in silly voices like Elvis, Stitch, SpongeBob, Rufus, etc.

9.
Silly Sentences - Use all of your spelling words to write as few sentences as possible. The sillier your sentences, the more fun you'll have!

10.
Spotlight on the Vowels - Write each spelling word normally. Now write each word again and go back and circle all of the vowels.

11.
Just Type 'Em - Type your spelling words on the computer or using a typewriter. Have fun using different fonts and colors!
