This morning dawned grey and wet
I wondered if this was as good as it would get
but then I pushed aside that thought
and concentrated on the quiet that it brought

I sit here and I write and hear a bird
sing the sweetest song I ever heard
off in the distance comes the barking of a dog
along the pond's edge, the croaking of a frog

Down the fence row blue fescue waves its plumes
the "susans" bob and weave their brown-eyed blooms
drinking their fill of raindrops falling down
'cause it might be awhile afore it again comes 'round

The puddle is full and is still as it waits for the birds
the quiet is over all, not being disturbed
there are no constraints, there is no stressful tension
it's like the world is hanging in suspension

Far-off I hear the thunder's rolling sound
and larger raindrops are falling all around
I hope it stays this quiet all day long
as I listen to the sweet mockingbird's song
