2003 Titans

    5/24/03 - District play
One game at a time, that's the message now at this point in the season.  We traveled to Sioux City to play Sioux City West for the first game of Districts.  We arrive a little late and it showed at the beginning of the game.  We looked flat and they were winning everything early.  I told them before we started that game that it was going to take possession and all out winning the ball if we were going to walk away on top.  It was time to put up or shut up, I need someone to step up and take charge.  Josh Grosvenor does just that.  Sixteen minutes into the game Josh goes to the right corner, beats his guy and goes to goal, he draws the defender and sends the ball to the middle where John Harvey is waiting.  Swing and a hit, (oops wrong sport), Harvey his there and he places the ball perfectly in the back of the net.  It was awesome.  We score first and go up 1-0.  Eight minutes later Josh is in the corner again, this time he beats the defender and goes to goal and puts it away on his own unassisted.  2-0 Titans, lets go.  Just two minutes left in the half and they manage to get the upper hand on one of their over the top passes and they put away to make it 2-1 at the half.  They were pounding us early in the first half but we managed to get in a few extra shots late to see them out shoot us 8-11 in the first half.  The second half was going to be a fight.  West has played some very good teams very tight this year and we knew they weren't planning on quitting.  They come out and score the first two goals of the second half and we find ourselves down by one, 2-3. They have taken charge of the game and we have stopped attacking the ball.  We make some subs to get some people some rest and things start to turn around.  Twenty four minutes in the second half Pat Powers heads to the left corner, attacks goal and sends a through ball to Pablo Navarrete in front of the goal.  Pablo puts it away and we are tied at 3 and our energy is back. With seven minutes left in the game West is called for hand ball in the box and we are awarded a Penalty Kick.  Josh Grosvenor steps up and puts us on top, and that is the way ends.  To finish it out we are now attacking everything, winning the balls in the air, and sending anything we get close to.  The last effort is by their keeper with 15 seconds left in the game, take it upon himself to put the ball down and make an attempt to head the other way.  He passes by several people until he gets to the middle and meets up with Doug Junior.  Doug takes him head on and sends the ball the other way and the whistle blows. One game at a time, that is what it is all about at this time of the year.  Hat's off today to Mr. Justin Toole for another fantastic game.  Justin had 21 saves and many of them where something to watch.  Great game Toole.  Doug Junior and Josh Grosvenor stepped up as well today.  Jesse Smith, Keith Damgaard, and Seth Jackson all were playing hurt, they played well and were not about to sit down.
Josh Probst and Luke Thomsen played very well in the middle and controlled the game most of the time.  We won the right to travel to Sioux City again on Tuesday to play Sioux City East.  This will be another scrappy game and we look for a tough one.  The game will be at the same field on Riverside at 6:30pm.
