African-American Quilt Connection

African-American quilt influence can be traced back to four main civilizations in Africa.   Slaves and textile trading created an intermixed of quilt designs from these civilizations.  Originally African textiles were woven by men, but since coming to America the women took over the role.  Traditional African textile designs used large shapes and bright colors.  All these influences led to appliqué and record keeping of African-American heritage.   Religious symbols are also used in African-American quilt designs.
