The Art of  Faith Ringgold 

   Faith Ringgold was born in central Harlem, New York  in 1930.   Her father was a sanitation worker and her mother was a fashion designer.  Faith also has two other siblings.  

 Ms. Ringgold is a contemporary artist who use quilts to tell stories.  Faith grew up visiting museums and began studying art at City college in 1950.  She earned her bachelor's degree in 1955 and began teaching art in New York public schools.  Ms. Ringgold studied the "great masters" (Van Gouh, Matisse, Picasso, Monet...) in Europe in 1961. She also studied African origins and their arts.  She went to museums and researched African art and designs which helped her to create what she called "her African-American experience". 

    She has exhibited in major museums in the USA, Europe, South America, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. She is in the permanent collection of many museums including, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and The Museum of Modern Art. She has written and illustrated five children's books Her first book, Tar Beach won a Caldecott Honor and winner of the Coretta Scott King Award for Illustration. She has received more than 75 awards, fellowships, citations and honors

    Faith Ringgold is married to Burdette Ringgold and has two daughters, Michele and Barbara Wallace; and three granddaughters, Faith, Theodora and Martha. She is a professor of art at the University of California in San Diego, California.
