Elemental: Gnomes, Trolls, Dryads, Hamadryad, Oreads, Satyr etc.

Gnomes: Givers of material gain and stability. The rulers of the forest. Seen as "Little People" or green light. Protectors of outdoor circles and groves. The Gnomes are about a foot and half tall, but can expand at will to giant size. Gnomes can pass through rocks and stones. The Gnomes are about the power of elemental Earth, and as such one factor involved in plant growth, ore, gems, crystals, etc. The Gnomes can be malevolent, grumpy and reserved, industrious and very close guardians of Mother Earth and her resources. They are not quite the same as the Nature spirits that tend plants, flowers and Trees (Dryads).

Trolls: large underground dwelling creatures that by legend have a taste for man. In certain fairy tales they live under bridges and other dark areas ready for the unwary traveler to come.

Dryads: Greek Tree Nymphs, of the forests and groves. The Dryads of the forest are each born with a particular tree which she watches over. All trees have a tree spirit, but certain trees have an especially potent relationship with the Dryads. ie. Oak, hawthorn, Ash, Rowan, Elm and Willow. Dryads will punish any mortal who would injure their tree.

Hamadryad: If a dryad dwells within the tree she is a hamadryad. Hamadryad's lives intertwine with the life of her tree, if it is sick, so is she and should the tree die so would the hamadryad. If the death of a tree is caused by a mortal hand the mortal will be punished by the gods.

Satyrs: Wild spirits of the forest, appeared as goat-like with puck noses, bristling hair, budding horns, and goats ears, tail and in some cases hooves. Wanton, crafty, frolicking in the forest chasing nymphs and playing impish tricks on humans.

Landvaettir: Land spirits who imbued the land and guarded its welfare. Helpful and timid, easily taking fright.

Light Elves: inspired the forest and fields.

Rock Giants: Rocky chasms and outcrops were created by giants who treaded to heavily at the dawn of time. Best suited to mist and fog, the mountain Giants like dwarfs were petrified by the light of day.

Dark Dwarfs: Were created from maggots in the rotting flesh of the slain Giant, Yimir. The Gods thought them to ugly to be seen and condemned them to a life underground. Like Giants they turn to stone in Daylight. They unearthed glittering gems and metals, from underground caverns.

Pan: A spirit of the Dark Forest he often startled solitary travelers, arousing sudden awe and panic. The word panic comes from this Earth Spirit.

You can make friends with gnomes, nature spirits and many other types of faery by showing respect for the Earth and by doing your bit to look after a plot of soil. A way of communing could be to go out and touch a solid rock, or place you hands in the soil, or even sit in a cave, and imagine the presence of the gnomes.
