In 1778 there  were 51 Farms in Shipley mostly rearing Cattle, Sheep ,Geese and other poultry  including Turkeys.
In 1801 the parish owned eight draught Oxen and 86  fattening oxen, 183 cows, 464 young cattle, 909 sheep 589 hogs, 8 goats.
The main crops were Wheat, Oats and Pees.
by 1847 the main land owners were
Sir Charles Burrell 2,000 acres
Rev. L Vernon Harcourt 1,000 acres
Caleb Richman 481 acres
Sir T Shelley 459 acres
Charles Goring 428 acres
The Labour Rate, encouraged by Sir Charles Burrell was  adopted in 1832 but did little to diminish the un employed which in the year  1829 was 110 Shipley men and in the winter of 1831/2 averaged 108
by the year 1830 the situation for many was desperate and  as many as 75 able bodied workers took themselves to Horsham or Brighton to find  work. many became so desperate that in 1835 many applied to emigrate abroad.
