This Dallas, Texas, USA-based quartet made an immediate impact on the rock scene with their refreshingly diverse debut, Sinner. Stevie Benton (bass) and Mike Luce (drums) attended high school together in Dallas, but parted company when Luce moved to New Orleans. It was while in this city that he began playing music with Christian Joseph Pierce (guitar), and after several years grafting around the local circuit the two men returned to Dallas to join Benton in the nascent Drowning Pool. Naming themselves after the movie, the band spent two years establishing themselves on the Dallas music scene before. In late 1998, following the departure of their original vocalist, they recruited the charismatic Dave Williams as their new frontman. The new line-up recorded a demo, which was released in limited quantities in May 1999. The tape found its way into the hands of Sevendust, who took the burgeoning outfit out on tour with them. Further dates followed opening for Kittie and (hed)p.e., all the while with no record label backing. After a second demo wound up in the Top Ten at Dallas radio station KEGL, Drowning Pool was promptly signed by the Wind Up label, resulting in the June 2001 release of their debut, Sinner (produced by Jay Baumgardner (Papa Roach, Godsmack, Orgy), and a spot on the summer's Ozzfest U.S. tour.
