Cooling...

Right, the plan was to put an 80cm exhaust fan at the back of the case, another fan blowing air in from the front of the case and a third fan in the lid blowing down directly on the motherboard just in front of the cpu. The case has a mount for a fan at the front but only has tiny air holes at the very bottom. Time for Mr drill to meet Mr Clunky.

Before the three fans on order from ebuyer (55p each!) arrived I gave the new dust free Mr Clunky a test run. Before the great cleaning and clutter removal job Sisoft Sandra was showing a cpu temp of around 38-39°C. Now with no dust to clog up its fan or heatsink it averaged 33-34°C, not only that but the fan's speed had risen by roughly 400rpm. Pretty good result.

Once the fans arrived it was time for major case surgery. After a lot of drilling and hacking ….the metal they use to make this case is thicker than the metal on my car …..I finally got a hole in the top big enough to take one of the fans.
