Benedictine Students break fast together. Photo courtesy of Noorjabeen Naseer.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim calendar and the month when the Qur’an was sent down from heaven as a guide to men for direction and Salvation.

During this month, Muslims fast throughout the daylight hours and spend much time concentrating on their faith and in worship. At the end of everyday during Ramadan, the fast is broken with a meal called iftar and a special prayer called tarawih (Night Prayer).

Here at Benedictine University, the Muslim Student Association (MSA) is devoted to providing a place for Muslim students to practice their faith and non-Muslim students to understand it and to foster a sense of community for all members of the BU community. When asked how becoming a member of the MSA is beneficial to her and others, Noorjabeen Naseer, MSA historian and editor-in-chief for The Candor, BU’s student newspaper, said she finds personal relevance in this student organization because it allows her the opportunity to meet and bond with others who share the same faith, and stay connected with her faith. MSA also gives her the chance to spread an accurate representation of her faith in general to not only the BU community but the community at-large.
