'Project Steve' was orinally a large more complex design consisting of three threaded bars. Two in order to adjust the pivot distance, it was the idea that two threaded bars would have been more stable. The third bar went through the two blocks to clamp the pedal. The original implementation that was constucted on the residential at the university is shown above. It was obvious that this design was much to bulky and was very heavy. It was decided that modifictions needed to be made to make the design more user friendly. We had no idea of how many changes there would actually be.
Original Design
First Mod
The first modification we made to Steve was to make the structure smaller, this was achieved by narrowing the blocks of aluminium that made the clamp. We took 20mm from the top of the design (see photo above left) this took the adjustable central bar closer to the edge. In order to make the structure mor stable we inserted a 'pin' between the two blocks (see photo above right) this is fixed in one block and can move in and out of the other. There were also rubber grips added and the adjustable bars slightly shortened.
Second Mod
In the second modification one of the aluminium blocks was cut down to a width of 20mm this not only made the design much lighter but the design now fits in the cars foot well much more easily. The structure now only has one adjustable thread but is still very stable when fitted to the pedal. If Steve does happen to fail it will still make a very nice mobile phone holder (photo above right)
