How to sew together the path log cabin blocks.

Although the quilt only takes twelve blocks, I was able to get 16 from a width of US fabric, so I just went ahead and cut/sewed the sixteen blocks and will use them for a pot holder hostess gift for Thanksgiving or maybe on the back of the wall quilt for "back art".   Okay, lets sew!

First you are going to make a nice patch using a quick rotary cutting method. These will be in the upper right corner of your block.

(WOF) means "width of the fabric" selvage to selvage which is usually around 42-44" in US fabrics.  If you are using Fat Quarters you can adjust accordingly... (probably double the strip amounts).  Fabrics that are more narrow you will have to adjust accordingly also.  Just figure how many 2 1/2" cuts you can get from the width of our fabric since you will need 12 cuts from each fabric set.

Sew one dark (path fabric)   2 1/2 inch X WOF  strip to one medium 2 1/2" X WOF inch  strip.

Re-cut the strip into twelve (12)  2 1/2 inch segments.

Press seam toward the path (dark)  fabric.

Sew one black (or path fabric) 2 1/2 inch  strip to one light   2 1/2" inch  strip.

Re-cut the strip into twelve (12)  2 1/2 inch segments.

Press seam toward the path (dark)  fabric.

. . .
Take one medium/dark (path)  section and one dark (path) /light section and sew together.

You should have  the top seam pointing up and the bottom seam pointing down when you sew, you will have a perfect butt joint.

You will need 12 of the four patch sections for the quilt with the pumpkin.

This section should measure 4 1/2" x 4 1/2"

Next take the 4 1/2" tall strip of  medium fabric and sub cut it into twelve (12)  2 1/2"  wide strips... .... cut 12
Sew the 4 1/2" medium strips to the left side of  all the four patch units as in illustration at right....

Press seam toward medium strip (away from four-patch)

If you put the four patch on the bottom and the plain strip on top it is easier to sew.  The seam doesn't get caught in the feed dogs.

This section should measure 4 1/2" x 6 1/2"

Probably a good time for a potty break, then have another drink or replenish.
Maybe slop some Captain Morgan in this one!
