Much of your pain is self-chosen.

It is the bitter potion by which the physician

within you heals your sick self.

Therefore trust the physician, and drink his remedy

in silence and tranquility:

For his hand, though heavy and hard, is guided

by the tender hand of the Unseen.

Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet

The mythical figure of Chiron, the wounded healer, was half man and half horse.

He represents a spirit of philosophical independance,

compassion and a sense of trust in our inner selves.

Chiron was rejected by his mother, the nymph, Philyra

and never knew his father Cronus (Saturn).

Adopted by Apollo, he became a wise man, prophet,

physician, teacher and musician.

Wounded by Hercules, he was unable to die because he was immortal

and remained eternally wounded.

Chiron returned to Earth, where he traded places with Prometheus,

and was eventually released from his suffering

and allowed to take his place in the Heavens.
