Providing Airborne Early Warning for the RAFv are the 2 Boeing E-3D Sentry aircraft of No.8 Sqn. There will be 2 pilots assigned to this unit and it is one of the planned areas of expansion within the RAFv.

No.8 Sqn and it's Sentry Aircraft work in Co-operation with Tornado F3 aircraft of Strike Command.

When used defensively the Sentry tracks the enemy aircraft approaching the UK/Friendly Airspace and directs the F3s to interecept them.

It can also be used in the Offensive role directing and co-ordinating friendly strike aircraft/bombers to their targets and warning of hostile aircraft.
