TOWARDS THE END OF THE SEVENTIES, the
Department of Zoology evolved slowly into the present-day
Department of Biological Sciences, in answer to a mandate
of the Ministry of Education on Culture and Sports that
the BS General program be replaced by a terminal program,
BS Biology. The curriculum of the BS General was revised
slowly and by 1990, the BS Zoology program was phased out
and in its place, a strong BS Biology program was
implemented. Today, the Department of Biological Sciences, remains to be the largest among the departments in the college with regards to student population and member of full-time faculty members. An integral part of the Department is a subdivision, the Department of Microbiology. A took into the future points to plans of introducing two academic streams for B. S. Biology - biotechnology and environmental biology, to compliment the more traditional preparation of the students interested in pursuing a medical career. Until, very recently, the department has embarked on an aggressive approach to faculty development, physical facilities, upgrading and a strengthening of technical skills in the delivery of quality education that is both relevant and useful. As we forge ahead into a future that demands greater capacity for competition on a global scale, let everyone remember the College battle cry Onward to Excellence! |
