Did you know? In ancient times, Chinese peasants had no surnames, or last names. Only the high class, and royalty had surnames. However, the emperor needed them to pay taxes, and therefore needed a full name in order to tell the difference between two or more people with the same name. The peasants took last names after the area they were living in. For example, people living in the area of Yeung, or Yang, took the last name of Yeung ( Yang ).
