Pituitary Surgery

On 21st MayPicture taken illegally by Andrew 2001 I had surgery at the Prince of Wales Hospital here in

Randwick for the removal of the pituitary tumour. Dr Kwok performed the surgery.

Dr Kwok is one of the most senior neurosurgeons in Sydney. He has maintained a high profile in all facets of neurosurgery, especially surgery for pituitary tumors.

Dr Kwok's latest appointment is at the Centre for Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery.

The transsphenoidal procedure is a surgical approach to the area of the pituitary gland, deep in the center of the brain. The most common indication for this procedure is a tumor of the pituitary gland. An endoscope is a device with a light attached, used to look inside a body cavity or organ. The scope is inserted through a natural opening, such as the mouth during a bronchoscopy, the rectum for a sigmoidoscopy, or the vagina for a cystoscopy. A medical procedure using any type of endoscope is called endoscopy. The vast majority of pituitary adenomas and Rathke’s cleft cysts, and many craniopharyngiomas that require surgery are best removed through a transnasal transsphenoidal approach using an operating microscopic. This surgical route takes advantage of the fact that the Pituitary gland sits in the pituitary fossa (sella turcica) in the middle of the skull base, below the brain and directly behind the sphenoid sinus. The transsphenoidal approach is performed through an incision under the upper lip (sublabial) or directly through one nostril (endonasal).

Andrew took these prictures while I was recovering from surgery.

There is an article on Endoscopic Transsphenoidal surgery at Medscape that is well worth reading.
