( A )   SCRIPTURE REFERENCES
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is the propitiation for the sins of the whole world.  The scriptures provide this evidence;

23.  For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
24.  Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
25.  Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
-  Romans 3:23 - 25

1.  My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
2.  And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.  -  1 John 2:1-2

10.  Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.  -  1 John 4:10

Propitiation is the removal of wrath of an offended person from the offender.  Propitiation removes hostility and enmity from between the offended party and the offending party by means of a sacrificial offering which is provided on behalf of the offender thereby resulting in peace and reconciliation between the two opposing parties.
In specific regard to this study, the offended person is God and the offending party being sinful mankind.  Christ offered His flesh and blood body, a vicarious ( substitute ), sacrificial offering by which He suffered on behalf of sinful mankind when He was crucified on the cross.   Another term in relation to propitiation is the word, expiation.  Expiation is the removal of guilt and fault of the offender.  Guilt and fault which occur due to a penalty or crime having been committed.  Expiation removes guilt and fault by the means of suffering for that guilt and fault.

Jesus Christ, a just and sinless man, suffered the penalty of mankinds sinful nature as He was crucified on the cross.   That penalty being the wrath of God and the condemnation of sin which is death.   Jesus Christ, a just and sinless man, suffered for the fault and guilt of mankinds sin.  It was Jesus' act of substitutionary suffering on behalf of sinful mankind whereby God was able to condemn all sin and wash away all sin.  Moreover, it was this sacrificial act of love whereby Jesus Christ obtained peace and reconciliation between God and mankind.
Jesus Christ suffered the wrath and judgement of God due to the offensiveness of the sins and sinful nature of all mankind and He offered His blood to do away with sins.  As a result, Jesus suffering the judgement for sin and the pouring out of His blood on behalf of sinful mankind was the act of love which satisfied the holy justice of God who condemns sin.  These definitions are what the scriptures mean when they write that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is the propitiation for our sins.  He suffered Gods' wrath for sin and paid the price of condemnation for sins, which is death, so that we, sinful mankind, would not have too. Thereby, making available the way for there to be peace between God and mankind, ( Hebrews 10:19-20 ), which ultimately results in eternal life with God if we embrace by faith the truth of Christs propitiatory act.

To further delve into and gain deeper insight of this act of propitiation by Jesus for our sins, we need to verify with the scriptures, the means by which Christ suffered and the manner of offering which He offered to God in order to turn Gods wrath and animosity away from sinful mankind.  Other revealing and interesting factors provided by the scriptures are the evidences of which party made the offering available for propitiation, why that is important, and the freedom and relationship which is made available to sinful mankind due to Christs act of propitiation.  Moreover, the scriptural evidence of Christs propitiatory act reveals why such works as water baptism and the perverted doctrines of Roman Catholic Mass and Jesus Died Spiritually ( JDS ) do not have any value or effort in the salvation of sinful mankind.  And therefore, no born-again Christian should embrace and believe that such things have a part to play in our propitiation for sins.
