Jana looking perplexed - 20,000 kilometres from her home in the Czech Republic

Eucla is situated some13kms west of the South Australian border and the name is said to have originated from the aboriginal word meaning bright. The town was established in 1877 as a manual repeater station for the Overland Telegraph with a jetty and 1km tram line for supplies. A town site was proclaimed in 1885 but was never developed. Traveling from the east many diggers passed through Eucla on their way to the  West Australian gold fields in the 1890's. The ruins of the Telegraph station are covered and uncovered by drifting sand and are reputed to be haunted. On the Highway itself there is a road house that has developed into a small  thriving settlement that caters to passing travellers with caravan facilities at both the Hotel and Motel.
