Because of inherent design issues with a three cylinder design, Volkswagen used a balancer shaft to qwell vibrations and the result is an extremely smooth engine. The 1.2l TDI also utilizes a Garrett turbocharger with variable-vane turbine geometry.

In 1997, the Mégane 1.9 dTi was the first French car to be equipped with a direct injection diesel engine, a technology which resulted in a gain of about 17% in fuel consumption and emissions by comparison with pre-chamber diesels.

 Laguna, the F9Q, a 1.9-litre common rail turbo diesel. This will feature a variable-nozzle turbocharger, boosting output from the current 110bhp and 25.7kgm of torque to 120bhp and 27.8kgm.

Following the F9Q is a replacement for the naturally aspirated 1.9D, the 1461cc 1.5 dCi. There will be two versions, the first delivering 65bhp and 16.5kgm torque. The second will have an intercooler bumping power up to 80bhp and giving 19kgm. Making its debut on the 1.5 dCi is a new common rail injection system from Lucas. Compact spherical casting replaces the usual rail, while operating pressure is 1600bar, much higher than existing 1350bar  time between pre-injection and main injection is only 0.1sec, which is very fast.”

Renault is also working on the development of the "F9Q" 1.9-litre engine family by offering regular technical upgrades.  Following the 1.9 dTi of 80/100bhp and the 1.9 dCi (110bhp/250Nm) with Common Rail, a new version with variable-nozzle turbocharger has been developed for 2000.  This engine will offer greater power (about 120bhp) and torque (270Nm).  A further version, embodying a 16-valve cylinder head and a 1,600 bar second generation Common Rail system, is under investigation.  Such a development could raise power output to 140bhp and torque to 300Nm, while being able to meet the Euro 2005 emission limits.

ADIVI (Alternateur Démarreur Intégré au Volant d’Inertie: flywheel integrated starter-alternator) is a major step forward in electrical systems and their contribution to the internal combustion engine. The 16-valve DOHC direct-injection engine is produced at Isuzu Motors Polska Sp. z o.o. in Poland.

Motor I Return 2.4 D5 of 163 CVI return introduces in its model S60, V70 and S80 a motor one Diesel of own production that substitutes al 2,5 TDi of five cylinders with 140 CV (D5252T) that utilized to date and that is of origin Audi. The new propellant (called by it marks D5244T) is completely different and is the first motor one Diesel for cars that Return has manufactured in its history.
