By now you all must be tired of reading about La Scala Italian Restaraunt, so I have a new review for you!
Has anyone else noticed the number of Mexican Restaurants in Rome? There must be one every mile, AND the new Rio Bravo that just opened up. I won't go to Rio Bravo, yet; I hate huge crowds and long waits. I'll go there in a few months and make my opinion known then.
In the meantime, I've been to the locally owned restaurants numerous times, so I'll start there.
First, the good news. With so many to choose from, we have plenty of variety in our Mexican food. Now, the bad news. Some of the variety is terrible. I am not an expert, but I do tend to like my food to taste like what it was grown to taste like: lettuce like lettuce, avocado like avocado, etc.... so I am partial to Los Portales in West Rome, across from Kroger. For cheap eats (get the coupon out of the Rome Sunday paper), this is good. The food can be custom ordered, and is served fresh and hot. Each ingredient has it's own flavor, and it isn't served as a big pile of mush on the plate. I especially like the tamales; at one point in my life (long ago and far away) I lived off of fantastic .99 tamales, bought from a roadside hole in the wall, for a week while in southern California. The tamales at Los Portales are the closest I've had to those. I do miss peeling the corn husks from them, fresh steamed; but these are pretty good.
The prices at Las Portales are very reasonable, and it makes a good weeknight place to go for a meal.
Las Portales has always treat us well. The servers, while they don't speak much english, are cordial, friendly and attentive. I've gone in there looking pretty grungy and definetly gay (I wear OUT shirts quite a bit), but we've always been treated good and enjoyed the meal!
