Volunteering

The cat abuse and overpopulation problem can be prevented. You can help prevent the feline abuse, starvation and overpopulation problem right in your very own neighborhood by joining our cause and participate in being part of a humane, community-based solution. We can all work together to prevent the pain and suffering of our feline friends and to control the overpopulation problem.

Here are some ways you can get involved with our Coalition.

A human being is part of the whole called by us universe , a part limited in time and space. We experience ourselves, our thoughts and feelings as something separate from the rest. A kind of optical delusion of consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from the prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty...We shall require a substantially new manner of thinking if mankind is to survive."

Adopt an alley cat colony: Healthy, infertile cats decrease euthanization costs and add value to our neighborhoods by deterring the rodent proliferation. Choose a particular area and feed and water the cats regularly. Try to ensure that they have some warm, safe hiding places during the winter.
Trap cats for spaying/neutering: You can help trap cats and take the cats to Petworth Animal Hospital for spay/neutering.
Spay/Neuter Alley Cats: This is the only way to prevent the overpopulation, and accordingly, starvation, freezing to death, abuse, etc., of cats. Please, please make sure your cats and your alley cats are spayed/neutered.
Adopt or become a foster parent: Take one or more cats (or a litter of kittens) into your home and heart either permanantly or caring for them until they can be matched with the best home. You would provide food, litter, shelter, and most of all, love.
Donate money for spay/neutering/medication (or donate food): Cash or check. Make your check payable to Metro Ferals and annotate on the memo section of the check for Ward 1Alley Cats. You can mail your contribution or have a Coalition volunteer pick it up. See our Wish List for items we are in need of.
Transport cats: You can transport cats and kittens to adoption centers and the Petworth Hospital. Also, if there are too many felines in any one area, you can help relocate them to safe country homes or refuges.
Report Abuse: If you see someone or someone's dog attacking a cat or for other types of abuse, please contact the police or the DC Humane Society at 723-5730. (It is a felony to let your dog attack another animal or person.).
Promote our Coalition: Tell your neighbors and friends about the Ward 1 Alley Cat Coalition to get their involvment. Distribute our flyers.
Join the Ward 1 Alley Cat eGroups. It's a good way to meet your feline friendly neighbors and to keep up with our news.
