'maybe I have got an advantage'

Founded in 1990 by Geoff Weston this unique destination winery is the Guinness Record for the World's Most Southern Winery. The limited production is only available from the winery and selected stores and restaurants. The Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines are Single Vintage, Single variety, and single vineyard from Bendeemer, Coal Pit Rd, Cromwell and Roxburgh in Central Otago. Because the wines a pure and truly dry they have an intensity of flavor beyond most wines. "But it is this intensity and freshness…this robust characteristic that is as close to the bunch on the vine as I can get that takes the wine onto at least a decade of aging,' says Geoff. 'Its all handpicked! And of course only from the best vineyards in the best harvests. So maybe I have got an advantage there.

With the new Roxburgh Chardonnay I don't have this privilege, so it's more of a challenge; but it's deep tasting already, even after the first harvest of the vines. The wine labels are rather unique as well, because they have beautiful scenic photography of Central Otago on them. 'Something I've never seen on any other Central Otago Label,' says Geoff; 'And I'm also lucky that my son Hans has such a good eye for great scenic moods in his photography… so the labels really are a wonderful feature…the labels even sell by themselves for quite good prices to collectors

The winery issues its own postage for its mail, a service we've had since 1990.

The stamps and covers are sold from the Wine Post site or from the winery itself.

'The first ever Roxburgh wine was made in 2003 from the Top Meadow Vineyard of Garth and Catherine Lucas, and is of great promise,' says Geoff, "With no frost at flower time or harvest. And disease free by it's very nature. The 'Roxburgh' is gifted with a serious lemon-fresh aroma and is a lemon-gold color with a peachy body and soft warm middles- topped off with a summer fresh mouth feel.

When I get the chance, I separate the free run juice and the press juice into separate barrels; and they come out as barrel One, Two, Three and so on; and in this way remarkably different styles can be made from the same paddock- without any intervention.

Wine prices range from $17.00 to $27.00 for the Chardonnay. And $32 to $52 for Pinot Noir. The winery is located on the edge of Dunedin under the hills of Flagstaff.
