In beginning of my software career I was fortunate to get lot of Icon design assignments. It is an amazing experience if I think back now. They are so complicated in nature (function of Icon or what icon should depict to the user), some time we use to wonder if any one can design such an icon to the perfection. Here perfection is in my opinion is one should be (potential user) able to recognize it with the function it does or at least he should be able to relate it with out fail after some easy learning. It is real challenge to design some thing like this, which is so businesslike in nature. Being a creative Visualizer in my earlier job, cracking head for ideas was not a problem,  in fact it was enjoyable experience. But fitting this idea in to 16X16 pixel canvas with only 16 colors in pallet was some thing unimaginable at beginning. At the end of the day I can say confidently that all these were a success by in large (although one may argue that some Icons are not understandable at all). In over all Icon designing process we set lot of standards, guidelines and conventions. Out come of these were Iconic language and elaborate icon design process.
So far I have designed 300+ icons for various web based business applications, ERP applications and other adhoc requirements.
