January 9~Emile Ford and the Checkmates, a British group of Bahamian immigrants, becomes the first homeland black act to top the British charts when "What Do You Want to Make Those Eyes at Me For?" hits Number One. Rock Almanac p. 52
January 18~A joint congressional Committee on Atomic Energy releases a report detailing the probable effects of a surprise nuclear attack on the U.S. Assuming that the targets~the 71 largest cities, 21 atomic installations, and 132 key military installations~were hit by at least one nuclear weapon, the attack, says the committee, would endanger about half of all Americans directly, killing 50 million and seriously injuring 20 million more. February 1~In defiance of store policy, four black freshman a A&T College sit down at a Woolworth's luncheon counter in downtown Greensboro, N.C. Over the next few weeks, the "sit-in," as the event will be called, will become a popular vehicle for civil rights activists, spreading to 15 cities in five Southern states over the next two weeks alone. February 6~Jesse Belven, an important figure in West Coast R&B during the Fifties, dies in an automobile accident in Los Angeles at the age of twenty. Rock Almanac p. 52
March 5~Elvis Presley is released from the army. Rock Almanac p. 53
April 14~Bye Bye Birdie opens on Broadway. The show, depicting an Elvis Presley-like pop singer, Conrad Birdie, who (like Elvis) must relinquish stardom temporarily to serve Uncle Sam, is the first musical about modern teens. Boom p. 173
May 12~Frank Sinatra's "Timex Spectacular" is broadcast on ABC-TV. Sinatra and Elvis Presley trade hits, Elvis singing "Witchcraft" and Sinatra crooning "Love Me Tender." Rock Almanac p. 54
June 20~Rod Serling's year-old show "The Twilight Zone" has brought television into another dimension, and his writing is honored with an Emmy award. Boom p. 112
August 12~The Worlds first telecommunications satellite, Echo I, is put in orbit. It will make possible satellite and telephone communications across Atlantic Ocean. Boom p. 113

December 15~The first Teflon-coated pots and pans go on sale, at Macy's in New York, for $6.94 each. Although the substance was invented in 1938, this is its first application for consumers; its use until now has been in manufacturing gaskets that resist the viciously corrosive uranium hexafluoride used in producing U-235, the key ingredient in nuclear bombs.
