Jeaneas, Obadius, and the prince
Did vow that night to follow Melinaus
Into the Underworld, to bring her back
From Hoys infernal realm. They ventured out
Across the river Tiber. Catacombs
They sought, but to their deep dismay
The Catacombs were closed indefinitely
For renovation, like everything else,
Our heroes tried to visit on their trip.
These things have been around for centuries!
Must everything be still in scaffolding
With cranes in pastel hues?
In olden days,
It was a good deal easier to get
To Hades. Our good heroes then sought yet
Another passage to the Underworld.
They found a sign upon a random street,
Two golden arches, and the words below,
"To Hades, 3 kilometers." They went
Where the sign said to go: into a door
And through a hallway, till they reached a room
Where in a wicker chair sat an old monk,
Asking for just a small donation, please.
So each left him a thousand-lira coin
And went into the crypt.
A thousand bones
Were fastened to the wall in curious
Designs, mosaics, bas-reliefs and heaps.
They journeyed through the barely lighted halls
Until they reached a forest of dead trees
Where souls of poor, unburied corpses traipse.
