Humorous Guest Speakers

Nov. 27, 2002 Two contestants from the District 4 Humorous Speech Contests agreed to a special encore performance just for CH@Home! On Nov. 20th, Steve Mock's "Rejection Letter" speech hit too close to home for many of us, but we laughed anyway. We especially enjoyed his responses to classic Top 10 interview questions.

The following week, Elliotte Mao, 3rd place winner, brought not only her sense of humor but also an entourage of five additional guests. Her "Parent's Hypocritic Oath" appealed to all of us who are parents or who have parents (to paraphrase her speech).

Thanks to Steve and Elliotte for their entertaining performances!

CH@Home Wins Golden Quill Award

Louise Wolfe & Maggie Yen--CH@Home Newsletter EditorsNov. 16, 2002 This year's winner for best club newsletter in District 4 went to CH@Home and to Louise Wolfe, newsletter editor. Louise wants to thank and acknowledge Maggie Yen, who created CH@Home's first newsletters. Maggie created and designed many of the features and formatting still used for the club newsletter.

Louise also won the Platinum Page Award last spring for the district's best website. Her next goal is to win the District Public Relations Officer contest. Her real goal, however, is to generate enough publicity to build the club back up to 20 members by June 2003.

Randy Samberg Earns Club's 1st ATM-S!

Randy Samberg Holding Her ATM-S CertificateNov. 6, 2002 Club Founder, Randy Samberg, presented her final speech from the "Speak to Inform" manual. In "The Truth is Out There--or Is It?" Randy explored different attempts to research the possibility of life on other planets. With this speech, Randy earned her Advanced Toastmaster (ATM) Silver--the first ever within CH@Home Toastmasters Club. Congratulations, Randy!

Randy is also a former Area C1 Governor and Toastmaster of the Year for Area C1 in 1998.

Having a member achieve an ATM award is one of the ten goals in Toastmasters' Distinguished Club Program. CH@Home has now earned 5 points this year, which qualifies us for Distinguished Club status.

Area C1 Contest

Blaise Pabon, Evaluation Contest WinnerWendy Siu, Humorous Contest WinnerSept. 21, 2002 Blaise Pabon won third place in the Area C1 Evaluation Contest. Wendy Siu competed against 6 other contestants in the Humorous contest and was compared to the Energizer Bunny! Living up to this image, she immediately dashed off to the airport for a European vacation. Thanks to both Blaise and Wendy for doing such a great job of representing our club.

Sophie Oberstein from City Talk won the Evaluation Contest and Vivek Ghiya from Oracle Speakers won the Humorous Contest. Both of their clubs were formed earlier this year. Obviously, both clubs are off to a good start!

Evening of Achievement

Blaise Pabon, ATM-BTejal Swar, CTMSept. 12, 2002 CH@Home Toastmasters again celebrated a special evening--this time an "Evening of Achievement". The event was attended by several members and guests, including five family members and VIP guest, Harry Holland, Division C Governor. All audience members introduced themselves with special "elevator speeches". Wendy Siu then made us laugh with her humorous speech "Diving".

Tejal Swar, CH@Home President, gave her tenth speech from the basic manual, an inspirational one. She not only earned her CTM award (Competent Toastmaster), but also her CL (Competent Leader). Double congratulations, Tejal!

Blaise Pabon, VP Education and Immediate Past President, completed the evening's speeches with a "bedtime" story from the "StoryTelling" advanced manual--"Indian Cinderella". He earned his ATM-B (Advance Toastmaster-Bronze) award. Congratulations, Blaise, and thanks for setting such an excellent example!

Blaise Pabon Wins Evaluation Contest

Blaise Pabon, Evaluation Contest WinnerAug. 28, 2002 Area C1 Governor, Rose Renwick, presented her "Peach Pie Philosophy" complete with Southern accent and country straw hat. Her speech served as the test speech for our four evaluation contestants. Two experienced Toastmasters, Blaise Pabon and Randy Samberg, and our two newest members, Tony Chenhansa and Debbie Tucker, took on the challenge. Blaise won first place, defending his title, and will compete at the area contest. Randy Samberg placed second and will be CH@Home's alternate representative.

Wendy Siu Wins Humorous Contest

Wendy Siu, Humorous Contest WinnerAug. 14, 2002 Four brave members, Karen Conley, Wendy Siu, Tejal Swar, and Louise Wolfe, tried their best to tickle our funny bones. Tejal shared some of her less than graceful moments. Karen described her favorite teacher's distracting slipping glasses. Louise placed second by recalling her many adventures with her first car--a beat up Chevy. The club winner was Wendy Siu and her scuba diving swim test, complete with elaborate gestures and energetic body movements. Swim away from that boat, Wendy, and on to the Area C1 contest!
