July 2003

Check Chamonix Meteo site for updates to the local weather.
.
Tourists have descended upon Chamonix in full force, now that European school holidays have started. It's been a hot summer, with many days in the 90s (34-36C) - very unusual for Chamonix.
.
Robert is working at home for the summer,
doing tiling and re-doing the kitchen in our apartment. Click the link to track our progress. The main floors are done and now we are onto the kitchen!
.
We went to some very cool events this and last month. First, we took a week to go to Cassis France, and also ended up going to the Verdon Gorge (which we liked better, due to the cooler temps and warm). Didn't see any climbers there, nor did we climb - temps in upper 90s (36-38) + humid.
.
The following week Rob's parents arrived for a visit and we had a nice picnic and hike up at the Col de Balme near Le Tour where Kobi got to go in an open chair lift and was amazingly good - he found snow patches at the top and got very happy! We also took a day trip to Aosta Italy to view the old section of the town (including Roman ruins) and have lunch.
.
The first few days of July Kate Steptoe (from 2 winters ago) stopped into town for a quick visit (with her mom and 2 sisters). We met up for dinner and did a hike from the Plan d'Aiguille to the Montenvers train station before they headed off to Northern Italy.
.
We took the long 4th of July weekend (long for Gen but not for the French) to go to Gstaad Switzerland where we visited some of Rob's friends and did a nice hike up to the Hornflue (despite the heat) and soaked up the atmosphere of Tennis Week.
.
The July 13th weekend was a big one in Chamonix - the World Cup Climbing competition was held over 4 days, and on the 13th there were the climbing difficulty finals, a giant beer tasting party thrown by the Micro Brasserie de Chamonix (Canadians!) and fireworks for the fete nationale.
.
In between we have done some local climbing at Le Fayet and Barberine and local hiking when it's not too hot.
.
Robin and Alison will visit in August. We will then join them for a week in Tuscany (Italy) near Florence. Gen's dad and step mom arrive at the end of August for a two week stay.
.
Looks like we are going to move to
another place before the end of the year - updated photos - click on the underlined link. The mortgage has been approved and we have started a search for renters and roommates. We hope to be signing by September 1st (French paperwork willing!). Looks like our old roommate from last winter is interested in returning, so we are off to a good start.
