The
best way to explore the city is by foot. Besides giving you the opportunity to
roam the narrow streets and the plazzas, it is the quickest way too: you can
'do' the city in approximately an hour. Sometimes it might be quicker to take a
short-cut across the water instead of following the bends of the bridges and
alleys. One way of doing this is taking the 'vaporetto', or waterbus. They leave
frequently and cover important parts of the city. The tickets, which can be
purchased at the landing stages and at shops which show the ACTV sign, costs
about 6000 Lire for a continuous journey. If your planning to use the 'vaporetta'
more often, it might be an idea to buy a 24-hour ticket (L18,000) or a three-day
pass (L35,000).

The Canale Grande can be crossed by 'traghetti', a gondala used for efficiency purposes. It is the cheapest way to get into a gondola (L800). If you feel like doing the canals the touristy way, you can hire a gondola for 50 minutes for the price of L120,000. Prices go up after sunset and make sure you confirm the price before sitting back and watching the gondolier do all the work for you.
