With just a couple of discotheques and nightclubs, Venice is hardly the city to choose for nightlife. The few young Venetians left in Venice nip across to Mestre to find the action after dark. Most tourists are content with a drink or to, a stroll through the streets and an early night.

Unlike many European cities, you can feel quite at ease walking in the city late at night. Watering holes range from tiny off-beat bars where you can rub shoulders with the locals to sophisticated hotel piano bars to – most famous of them all – Harry’s bar, which is still the place to spot the stars and sip champagne and peach juice.

Casion

The Casion Municipale is open from April to September on the Lido. For the rest of the year the casino is located in the magnificent Palazzo Vendramin-Calergi on the Grand Canal. Both venues are open 4pm –3am, have nightclubs, show and restaurants, and charge an admission fee. Dress smartly and take your passport or ID card. Line 40, the ‘Casino Express’ service, goes from Tronchetto to the Lido, calling at Piazzale Roma, the railway station and San Zaccaria.

Cinema

Movie aficionados flock to the Lido in late August/early Stptember for the International Film Festival. This is Lungomare Marconi, and the Astra, Via Corfu. Otherwise te cinema in Venice is unremarkable.For cinema information telephone the Venice Film Office. The most likely venue for the big English language releases is the Accademia Cinema.

Gondola

The most enjoyable evening pursuit in Venice is gliding down the canals in a gondola. Gondoliers tout throughout the city; alternative you can call for a gondola. If you cannot afford the exorbitant fees, make do with a No 1 night vaporetto down the Grand canal, which goes sufficient slowly to glimpse all the places. Te boats go on running until about midnight.

Music and theatre

There are opera, music and theatre in Venice. You can enjoy take you time when you go.
