Extending along the mouth of the lagoon, the Lido is an 11km strip of shore which forms a protective barrier between Venice and the sea. The original Lido, it gave its name to bathing establishment all over the world.

The Sights on Lido Island:

Forte di Sant’Andrea

Designed by the great military engineer, Michele Sanmicheli, this mighty Istrian stone fortification was built between 1535 and 1549 on the island of Le Vignole to guard the main entrance of the lagoon. The fort has been badly eroded by the sea and is currently being restored. Its was in the channel here that the doge annually cast a gold ring into the water, symbolising the marriage of Venice with the sea. The fort is currently closed to the public.

Old Jewish Cemetery

The first Jewish cemetery in Venice, it was founded in 1386 in the grounds of the monastery of San Nicolo. Though very overgrown it is worth visiting to see the surviving tombstones of eminent Italian Jews.(Via Cipro, San Nicholo. Opening hours unrestricted. Admission free.)

Festivals

The International Film Festival, organised by the Biennale, takes place at the palazzo del Cinema and the Astra Cinema on the Lido at the end of August or beginner of September. One of the major film festival in Europe, it lasts for two weeks and films are shown day and night.

In summer her fascination is enhanced by the luxuriant greenery, the incomparable sunsets on the lagoon, the sweet ripple you feel in the air. A stirring eagerness urges you to go out and inhale the subtle seductivness of this city.

Here on Lido the tones and colours are more subdued and the air discreet for those who ask for a vacation full of refined well-being and relaxed atmosphere. The hotels, hidden among the greenery, do not have the brash arrogance of modern constructions built for mass tourist accommodations. Where summer means mainly holidays, and holidays mean bracing sea, air, sports, entertainment, beach and relaxation.

Here, hotels are still home for the Guest not just an anonymous cold structure of where to eat and sleep. On the Lido you are sorrounded by a relaxed atmosphere. Take advantage of it. Enjoy the numerous sports facilities the Lido boasts: golf course, horse back riding, school and track, archery, and then, tennis, sailing of windsurfing. Last but certainly not least there is the magnificent beach, at once combining lazy abandon with exciting entertainment. And it is Venice that gives Lido its extraordinary dimension: here a sea-side holiday takes on a different meaning because the history, art and traditions of the city enrich pure entertainement with cultural moments. Here, as nowhere else in the world.

Casino

It is in the evenings that the Lido comes alive in a social whirl, breaking the silence in elegant rooms, at the roulette tables or in restaurants where colourful dishes of fresh fish from the Adriatic invite you to linger; or when the night festivals for St. Mark's Day or the Redentore break out with their music and songs and fireworks fill the sky with a thousand different colours. All this must be experienced personnally to get to the core of the spell only Venice can cast on her visitors.

Besides beach, casino, cinema, golf, horse riding, parachuting, sketting, tennis, water-Ski and wind-Surf , there are some of other services such as bow shooting, dancing, soccer, target shooting and underwater fishing – sail.

Beaches

The Lido’s beach season lasts from mid-June to mid-September. In a recent survey it was classified among the hundred cleanest beaches in Italy. However, the proximity of the heavily industrialized towns of Mestre and Marghera may put you off the idea of a dip. The only public beaches lie to the northern and southern ends of the island. Between them lie the finely manicured sands of the beaches controlled by hotels. For water and others ports on the Lido.
