A NEW HOPE

1977 ***** 121 mins. (Special Edition and 2004 DVD Edition each run 125 mins.)

ORIGINAL THEATRICAL VERSION

George Lucas captured the attention of the world when this film was released in 1977, and he has yet to lose it. This fantastic space western is unrivaled in its wonderment and historical value. The special effects are great, the performances are believable, and the story is intriguing. It is obvious that George Lucas had, and still has, a firm grasp on the history and future of this saga. This is what a science fiction film should be. Filmmakers of today, take note: back in the days when special effects had to be physically accomplished, they looked a lot better.

SPECIAL EDITION

I know that my faithful readers may find this shocking, but I actually feel that this is a GREAT re-edit of this film. The added scenes actually make sense, and there are even one or two funny moments in the additions--funny moments that were intended to be funny. I feel that the added scene with Jabba the Hutt is a great scene that binds this film to Episode VI. While the arrival at Mos Eisley is way too computer animated to go along with the rest of the film, it is still fun to watch. I will admit that this release was necessary, so that the original films can be brought to a more continuous look with the new prequels being released.

2004 DVD Edition

I have made up my mind. This is the most necessary version of the film. The 2004 DVD releases of the Star Wars Trilogy cause the films to really look and feel like the new films that are out.

What you have heard is true. This is changed even more than the Special Edition. A couple of differences are: Jabba the Hutt is re-animated, so he looks a bit more like the one in Episode VI and the light sabers are actually the colors they are supposed to be. In the previous releases, they were not the exact blue and red they were supposed to be. The look of this version is right there with Episode I, Episode II, and Episode III.
