MICHAEL JACKSON
DANGEROUS
T H E S H O R T F I L M S
1993 ****1/2 112 mins.
This video is a great collection of short films (music videos) from Michael Jackson's 1991 album Dangerous. Before many of the videos, there is behind-the-scenes footage or other surprises that truly make this video a great experience. Some of the videos are fantastic while others are, simply, not so imaginative. I will break it down for you:
- DANGEROUS TEASER - ****1/2 - Directed by David Lynch. This is an odd little opening and ending that does just what it says.
- BLACK OR WHITE - ****1/2 - Directed by John Landis. Michael's controversial video that caused quite a stir on it's original broadcast. Here, there is a new "twist to the controversy." Also Starring: Nancy Cartwright (voice of Bart Simpson), Dan Castellaneta (voice of Homer Simpson), Macaulay Culkin, John Landis (Making-of footage), Peggy Lipton, Wade J. Robson, and George Wendt
- SUPERBOWL HEAL THE WORLD - ****1/2 - Great song, great performance. The only down side is that this video does not include the entire Super Bowl performance, which was, in my opinion, the best Super Bowl performance in history. Also features the voice of James Earl Jones.
- REMEMBER THE TIME - ****1/2 - Directed by John Singleton - This is one of Michael's most famous videos. It co-stars Eddie Murphy and Iman as an Egyptian magisterial couple who are entertained by Michael. Iman a bit too much, maybe, rousing her husband's jealousy. Also stars Magic Johnson and John Singleton (Making-of footage).
- WILL YOU BE THERE - **** - Directed by Vincent Paterson - This is not the same video that appears on the Free Willy videos. It's a great song, but the video that goes along with it is mostly concert footage and not that spectacular.
- IN THE CLOSET - **** - Directed by Herb Ritts - Great music, great performances, great feel to the video. However, the whole setting just feels wrong. Also Starring: Naomi Campbell
- GONE TOO SOON - ***** - Directed by Billy DiCicco - This video will really tear at your heart and soul because it shows real footage of a young boy who was born with AIDS. Starring: Ryan White
- JAM - ***** - Directed by Michael Jackson and David Kellogg - This is, quite possibly, my favourite video in this collection. Let me put it this way: we get to see Michael Jackson try to teach Michael Jordan to dance and Michael Jordan try to teach Michael Jackson to play basketball. Great fun! Also Starring: Heavy D, Kriss Kross, and Wade J. Robson
- HEAL THE WORLD - **** - Directed by Joe Pytka - Wonderful song is not done full justice in this video which simply shows people suffering around the world.
- GIVE IN TO ME - *** - Directed by Andrew Morahan - Considering this is one of my absolute favourite Michael Jackson songs (one of the most personal, at least), I was sorely disappointed with this video. Also Starring: Gilby Clarke
- WHO IS IT - ***** - Directed by David Fincher - This never was one of my favourite Michael Jackson songs, but the video is absolutely stupendous. The story is incredible, and the cinematography is wonderful. The video is shot in a 2.35:1 aspect ratio and is lit with blues and tans that create a magnificent feeling. This, along with "Jam" are the two highlights of the video
- DANGEROUS - **** - This is just a collection of footage from the Dangerous World Tour
NOTE: This video also features archive footage which features Adolph Hitler, Janet Jackson, Martin Luther King, Jr., LL Cool J, Brooke Shields, Wesley Snipes, and Oprah Winfrey
