Spawn Description:

Despite having a large female and a young male, the spawn was huge. It was after much damage to the male that eggs were finally laid on 28 Dec 2001. Noticed that it is 4 days after the pair was introduced into the spawning tank.

Spawning Starts: 25/12/2001
Remove Female: 28/12/2001
Hatch: 01/01/2002
Free Swimming: 04/01/2002
Remove Male: 06/01/2002
Results: 200 - 250 fries feeding on daphnia/micro-worm (06/01/2002)

 

PS: Now the fries are feeding on micro-worm and daphnia due to the danger of missing ventral in fries feeding on pure micro-worm diet.

 

Spawn Observations:

7 Jan 2002: Mortality 0%
- The fries now feed on daphnia and miccro-worm and seems to be doing well.

15 Jan 2002: Mortality 0%
- Size: 8mm 

-- This time the fries seems to grow very evenly with all of them growing at the same rate. Feed on micro-worm, daphnia and baby betta food.

15 Jan 2002: Mortality 0%
- The water turned bad and foul smell ddetected due to excessive feeding. Complete water change performed. Fries seems ok and feeding well.

22 Jan 2002: Mortality 0%
- Moved all fries to 6ft X 4ft fiber gllass tank.

- Size: 10mm

28 Jan 2002: Mortality 0%
- All fries adapting well to the large tank and rapid growth detected.
- Some large fries displaying red colorration, and so far none display the marble traits of the father. 50/50 inheritance from the parent fish. 

01 Feb: Mortality 0%
- Fries Doing well in tank.

- Size: 15mm


01 March: Mortality 0% Cull 5%
- Fries sorted and jarred. 

- 39 containers with selected males and females. Assortment of marbles, cambodians, steel blues, butterflies, and even a few melanos.
- Size: 25mm to 30mm

19 Mar 2002: Mortality 0%
- Jarred about additional 30 individualls.

- Now total at 70 jars. 

- The marbles showed the best coloration and finnage so far.

 

10 Apr 2002: Mortality 0% Cull 30%

- Prepared for open house on 13 April 2002.

- Surprise discovery that most of the Irids actually turned into Blue/White butterflies.

 

16 April 2002:

Conclusion:

The spawn is a success with most if not all of the fries surviving till selection. The varieties of colors within the spawn is amazing as described below:

 

- Black/White Marbles: 20%

- Cambodians: 20%,

- Black/Red Butterflies: 20%

- Blue/White Butterflies: 20%,

- Crystals: 20%

- Melanos: 2%

 

Most of the fish are delta tail although some has got crown-tail like extensions probably inherited from the female crystal.

 

The best of the whole spawn are the Blue/White Butterflies and Marbles. Their photos can be seen under the link to the Butterflies and Marble pages.
