Spawn Description:

The Opaque STM is the Runner-Up in the Opaque/Pastel Category (Pic 1, 2) in the 1st BCS competition. A large male that dominated the whole spawning process with no finnage tear at all for himself. As for the female, I was able to get a very docile female that succumbed to the male advances with no fight. Thus her finnage was completely intact as well.

If the spawn goes well, might consider trying another spawn with the same pair again.

- Opaque STM: >170 degree, tertiary spilts, no red wash

- Opaque STF: >90 degree, secondary splits, no red wash

Spawn Observations:

18 Apr 2002:

- The eggs are beginning to hatch.

- Now preparing out-door grow-out tank with daphnia introduced.

20 Apr 2002:

- The fries are free-swimming now.

- Father removed.

22 Apr 2002:

- Fries feeding on daphnia and micro-worms.
- Bottom feeders, got to monitor the waater condition to prevent the ventral-less syndrome from happening.

29 Apr 2002: Mortality 1-2%

- Fries active and feeding on daphnia and micro-worm.

- Size: 5-6mm

9 May 2002: Mortality 0%

- Fries feeding well on daphnia/microworm diet.

- >200 fries, ventrals detected on larger fries.

- Size: 10mm

17 May 2002: (Mortality 0%, Cull 10%)

- Now feeding on tubifex-worms

- Some bigger fries have red-wash detected

- Found 2 fries with fused caudal and cardinal fins.

- Size: 10 - 15 mm

07 June 2002: (Mortality 0%, Cull 30%)

- Size: 2.5 cm

- Left about 100 fries

- Some fries already showing good finnage and straight outer rays.

- Red wash disappear with the Red-loss effect occurring.

Conclusion (07 June 2002):

The spawn is a success with the low mortality rate and the quality of the fries are reasonable. The fries initially had lots of red wash which disappeared at about 1 1/2 month due to red-loss effect.

Now 90% of the fries are snow-white but with transparent areas on the finnage.

Finnage wise ... most of the fries exhibits good ray splits and straight outer ray which makes them good selections as potential HMs.

Conclusion (24 June 2002):

The spawn which is now about 2.5 months and I am able to tell the gender of the fishes. The spawn have a higher percentage of female at 70%. So I ended up with some females with good finnage but the males are less desirable in overall  quality although I managed to get some males that are nice with more than 150 deg caudal spread.

With retain some of the females from this spawn and out-cross with other Opaque lines available amongst our local breeders ... possibly the PG or HG line.

Stay tuned ...
