Born: October 14, 1890 at Denison, Texas.
Education: Graduated from United States Military Academy (West Point).
Occupation: Army officer. A career soldier, Eisenhower served in various parts of the world; became Third Army chief of staff in 1941. As brigadier general; was named commander of European Theater, World War II in 1942; and supreme Allied comander in 1944. He led the D-Day invasion, 1944; chief of staff, 1945-48. Retired from active duty, but named NATO commander in 1950.
Religion: Presbyterian.
Family life: Married Mamie Geneva Doud at the Doud home in Denver on July 1, 1916. The first son Doud Dwight or "Icky," who was born in 1917, died of scarlet fever in 1921. A second child, John, was born in 1922 in Denver. Like his father he had a career in the army; later he became an author and served as ambassador to Belgium. John's son married the daughter of President Richard Nixon. In 1961 the Eisenhowers returned to Gettysburg for eight years of contented retirement together. After her husband's death in 1969, Mamie continued to live on the farm, devoting more of her time to her family and friends. Mamie Eisenhower died on November 1, 1979. She is buried beside her husband in a small chapel on the grounds of the Eisenhower Library in Abilene, Kansas.
Political carrer: A war hero, was nominated for the presidency in 1952; reelected in 1956.
Highlights of his preidency: Ended Korean War. Promoted highway building program. Sent federal troops to Arkansas to enforce school desegregation. Broke diplomatic relations with Cuba.
Appearance: About 5 feet 11 inches tall, athlectic build; bald.
Died: March 28, 1969 at Washington D.C.
Buried: In a small chapel on the grounds of the Eisenhower Library in Abilene, Kansas.
