LINE

Born: September 15, 1857 at Cincinnati, Ohio.

Education: Graduated from Yale University and Cincinnati Law School.

Occupation: Lawyer, jurist, public official. Law professor at Yale 1913-21, and the United States Chief Justice, 1921-30.

Religion: Unitarian.

Family life: Married Helen Herron in 1886; they had two sons and a daughter; Robert, Helen, and Charles. She continued to live in the capital after his death in 1930, she died at her home on May 22, 1943.

Politicial career: Appointed Judge in 1887; United States solicitor general, 1890. Governor of the Philippines, 1901; then, as secretary of war, was advisor to President Roosevelt. Later led conservative Republicans opposing Roosevelt, but lost 1912 election.

Highlights of his presidency: Sixteenth Amendment added. Alaska gained full territoral government. Department of Labor established.

Appearance: A very large man, about 6 feet 2 inches tall, weighing over 300 pounds.

Died: March 8, 1930 in Washington D.C..

Buried: The grave of President Taft, which lies down the hill and down a path from the Kennedy gravesite is in the National Cemetery at Arlington, Virginia.
