PRESIDENTS DAY![]() ![]() Born: October 27, 1858 in New York, New York. Education: Graduated from Harvard, attended Columbia Law School. Occupation: Rancher, lawyer, public official, big game hunter. Became a national hero leading "Rough Riders" in Spainish American War. Religion: Dutch Reformed. Family life: Married Alice Hathaway Lee in 1880; they had a daughter. In 1884 his first wife, Alice Lee Roosevelt, and his mother died on the same day. He married Edith Kermit Carow in London in December 1886; they had four sons and a daughter. She died on September 30, 1948, at the age of 87. Political career: Entered New York state assembly as independent Republican in 1881. Retired to his ranch after deaths of wife and mother in 1884. Was United States Civil Service Commissioner, 1889-95. Elected governor of New York and then nominated for vice-president in 1900. With the assassination of President McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, not quite 43, became the youngest President in the nation's history. Reelected in 1904. Given Nobel Peace Prize in 1905, for work in ending Russo-Japanese War. Tried unsuccessfully for renomination in 1912. Highlights of his presidency: For regulation of business trusts. Advocate of "big stick" in diplomacy. Encouraged building of Panama Canal. Appearance: Medium height, bushy eyebrows and mustache, wide mouth and prominent teeth. Died: January 6, 1919 at Oyster Bay, New York.
