Religion: Methodist. Family life: Married Julia Dent in 1848; they had three sons and one daughter. Political career: As a hero of the Civil War, was nominated by the Republicans in 1868. After serving two terms he was defeated for renomination in 1880. Highlights of his presidency: Chose not to press terms of Fourteenth Amendment. Second administration marred by scandal; his appointees charged with accepting bribes. Appearance: Short and stocky, with bushy, dark brown beard. Died: July 23, 1885 at Mount McGregor, New York.
