April 2004 Check Chamonix Meteo site for updates to the local weather. . April 23 - A very nice snow ski season this past year. Quite a lot more cloud than the past 2 years, and still some strange warm-up melts mid-season that surprised everyone. But overall, we had very nice snowfalls and even some great Spring skiing with late snow. Lifts are closed already at the sunnier smaller hills in the valley and May 1-2 is the closing party at the Grandes Montets. Hardier flowers are peeking through to bloom, though we did have snow on the ground at the beginning of this week! . We didn't do as many road tips this year at all! But did manage the Vallee Blanche and also a side trip to Tignes and Rob went to La Tuile Italy where he said the snow and off-piste was great. And we've already managed to go to the first Cow Fights (Bataille des Reines) of the season, across the border in Italy. . Rebecca came out for a visit for 10 days at the end of the season in April and had fun learning skiing a couple of times, though the weather wasn't so great. Also we did trips to Annecy and Martigny Switzerland to see the nice Giannada museum and sculpture garden. The apricot trees and forsythia were blooming and it was lovely. . Rob's taking an end of season BASI ski instructor course for 2 weeks in Tignes France (3 hours away) and Gen is taking a 3 month long 5 day a week French course in Annecy until mid-June. . Our new house will doesn't seem new anymore after 1 winter, but still could use some decoration and sprucing up. We've started to make the garden nicer by planting 3 forsythia bushes along the road, and planting flowers and re-seeding the lawn (and also replacing some of the clay soil with topsoil. Sadly the beautiful old farm and apple orchard across the street is suddenly become a building site, and we may think about moving elsewhere as the rural quality of this location seems to be on it's way out...stay tuned. . Summer plans are a bit up in the air. We were going to go to Canada for Myka and Dennis's wedding, but now that may change. We are thinking of spending the summer in Chamonix and strangely enough trying to enjoy the mountains in our own backyard a bit more this summer. Weekend road trips are highly likely. . Our apartment in Chamonix is for rent by the week this summer, and we've created a web page to advertise it at http://www.alpsadventures.com So far we have a few bookings for the summer weeks and should at least break even this year on our running costs, which was our main goal. . On that same website I've added a tourism 'links' page which has links to a number of Chamonix tourism sites, as well as links to tourist sites for nearby areas such as Courmayeur, Martigny, Les Houches and Servoz. Click the underlined text to search this page for tourist information on Chamonix and the surrounding three country alpine tourist area (Switzerland, France, Italy). |
