2002 ***** 179 mins. (Special Extended Edition runs 223 mins.)
The Journey Continues as the ring-bearer and his companion continue their journey to Mount Doom to destroy the Ring of Power. Meanwhile, feelings of impending doom fill the minds of those preparing for war. The armies of the dark lord Sauron and his wizard accomplice Saruman are growning ever stronger. The film culminates in the battle of Helm's Deep, which is as epic of a battle sequence as there ever has been captured on film. Peter Jackson's genius is evident, once again, as the film flies by, its length not even an issue. The old characters sill hold their strength, while the new characters only add to the wonderment and spectacle. Again, the extended version, despite a few unnecessary scenes, deserves every bit of the five star rating that the theatrical version receives.
Rated PG-13 for epic battle sequences and some scary images.
