Chariots I Sauna (and gym)
Chariots III Sauna
Earls Court Gym

Pleasuredome Central Sauna

    Centrepoint Gym
1200-2100 Mon-Fri, 1200-1800 Sat and Sun. Tottenham Court map
In the subway which accesses Tottenham Court tube station.
Tel (0)20 7240 6880

Small gay gym close to Tottenham Court tube stations, and which offers the usual range of exercise equipment and weights. Not luxurious, but good enough. Despite what it says on the door, I believe that non-members pay just £5 for a workout and shower (and not £7). Qualified instructors are available, as are sunbeds at around £5 a session. It's a bit tricky to find so here are directions: if you arrive by tube at Tottenham Court tube, pass through the ticket barriers and head for exit 5 (ask a member of staff if you are not sure which exit is which). You will end up going along a subway and you will see the word "Gym" on the wall in big letters on your left - you can't miss it, it is 8 foot across. Immediately to the right of the sign is a flight of steps up towards street level - the entrance is a few steps up on the left.  Top

Chariots I SaunaLocation of Chariots 1 sauna
1200- 0900 (following day) Mon-Sat, 1200-2400 Sunday
Fairchild St, EC2 (next to Majestic wines). Tel (0)20 7247 5333. Liverpool Street  mainline and tube stations.

Chariots I is the biggest of the Chariots chain of saunas, and is top notch. For £12 there are two saunas and steam rooms, TV lounge, gym, TV room, large swimming pool which is heated (thank goodness), two jacuzzis and the usual host of private rooms and complimentary tea and juice bar. You can also pay for a qualified massage and use the high powered sunbeds if you want to fry yourself. Possibly the most luxurious sauna in London. Chariots bar is next door. Definitely recommended if you want top end.

Chariots III Sauna
1100-2300 Sun-Thurs, 1100- 0300 (following day) Fri and Sat.
57 Cowcross Street, EC1. Tel. (0)20 7251 5553.

Chariots III is smaller than Chariots I (no pool, for example), but still good. It is situated directly opposite the exit of Farrington tube station, and is also very close to Turnmills club in Farringdon (which operates some very popular gay club nights) - this makes it especially convenient if you want to go immediately before dancing your head off in the club. Admission is £10 Mon-Fri (£8 before 1600), £10 all weekend.

Earls Court Gym

0630-2200 Mon-Fri, 1000-2200 Sat, 1000-1800 Sun. Earls Court map
254 Earls Court Rd, SW5. Tel (0)20 7370 1402 Earls Court tube

Non-gay gym close to Earls Court Station (Earls Court Rd exit). This is very popular with the local community of Muscle Marys, who go to huff and puff in the cruisy atmosphere. It is larger and posher than Centrepoint Gym, although that is reflected in the price. It has an extensive range of equipment. Non members can buy a day pass to use the gym for £8 (£6 before 1700 of a weekday), £6/£5 for aerobics only, or £11/£8 for gym and aerobics. Towels can be hired for just under £1. Sunbeds £7.50   Top

Goslings Swimming Group
2030 (meet in the foyer around 2015) Tottenham Court Rd Map
Oasis Sports Centre, 32 Endell St (corner of St Giles High Street) Tel. (0)20 7831 1804 Tottenham Court  tube

If it is mid winter and snowing, and you fancy swimming in a hot outside pool right in the middle of London, then head for the Oasis Sports Centre on a Thursday night and splash around with the Goslings gay swimming group. In fact, the Goslings meet all the year round - and you will find it much easier to make new acquaintances here than in the cruise bars! Afterwards everyone heads next door to the downstairs bar of the Opporto Tavern for a drink, and to consummate their new relationships with a beer. If you are feeling more energetic, you could try the competitive swimming group which meets an hour or so earlier in the inside pool - its called 'Out to Swim' (phone for details). Either way, remember to take a bathing costume and towel and have some good clean fun.   Top

Pleasuredrome Central Sauna (Waterloo)
open 24 hrs, 7days a week. See map below.
125 Alaska St, SE1. Tel (0)20 7633 9194. Waterloo mainline and tube stations.

Pleasuredrome Central sauna is close to the central gay area of London and has a reasonable range of facilities (two saunas, two steam rooms, private cabins, whirlpool jacuzzi etc.). Of late, it seems to have become somewhat tatty, however, a much needed makeover is now in hand. Nevertheless it is extremely popular - both with the young and good looking, and also the more mature and heavyweight homosexual. Everyone seems to have a very good time, whether they look like Tom Cruise or Pavarotti. And after you have enjoyed the steamy atmosphere, there is a soft drinks bar where you can recover and help yourself to unlimited coffee, cola, fresh fruit, biscuits etc.

At weekends, Pleasuredrome (Waterloo) comes into its own in the early hours of the morning - when men drift out of the clubs in central London, and walk across the Thames to enjoy a sauna and whatever  - until the tube trains start at around 0530, (or 0700 on Sunday morning). Once I had to queue for 20 minutes to get in at 4 am because it was full! There are lots of nice hygenic wipe-clean mattresses to grab some rest - but take your earplugs as they seem to turn up the piped music at night - and it can be DEAFENING.   Top

Map of where Pleasuredrome isFinding Pleasuredrome can be tricky so:
when you arrive by tube at Waterloo, follow the signs up to the to the mainline station which is directly above the tube. From the concourse, take the exit opposite platform 5, going down the escalators and out onto Waterloo Road. Once on the road, turn left, and you will see a pub - 'the Wellington'  which is fifty yards up on the opposite side of the road. Alaska street runs down the left hand side of the pub, under the railway arch - the sauna is about 70 yards along on  the right.
