TV/TS London

window display in Soho
Well, to be frank I am not the world's expert on the TV/TS scene, and my policy in this website is not to bullshit about what I am not personally familiar with.

However I do know enough to get you started - so have a look below at my suggestions.

If however you know the London TV/TS scene in more 'gynecological' detail and can recommend any good venues, websites or anything else, drop me a line to [email protected] and I'll try to take account of them on this page.

"She wore far too much rouge last night, and not quite enough clothes. That is always a sign of despair in a woman."

Where to stay and where to drink:
I have often stayed in the Philbeach Hotel in Earls Court (see my review under 'Where to Stay') and can confirm that it is very tranny-friendly. There are often nice girls hanging around the smallish downstairs bar in the evening - this is a very discrete venue, and you don't have to stay at the hotel to have a drink (you can change and glam-up in the loos). It will usually get a bit  busier later in the evening (say 0900) although don't expect crowds. On Thursdays, there is a tranny night at Ted's Place (an even more discrete bar,  a five minute taxi ride away) and a few of the girls stay at the Philbeach on that night - returning to perch on the barstools in the hotel bar after Ted's closes. (Note, Ted's Place is now closed on Saturdays - which used to be another tranny night - sorry girls!)

Where to go:
As I mentioned above, Ted's Place in Earls Court has a tranny night (including admirers, of course!) on Thursday's and Saturdays (disco or sometimes Karaoke). It is open 1900 until late (probably until 1 or two in the morning), although I would expect it will be fairly empty until around 2100. £5 entry. Read my detailed review of Ted's under 'Raunchy Venues'. Whilst I have been to Ted's on regular gay nights, I have never been on a TV/TS night. However I have heard that it attracts a good crowd of girls who have a good time. Ted's staff are among the friendliest I have met on the scene in London.

Ron Storme's 'Club Travestie': this club in Stepney is a real stomping ground for TVs, TSs on Saturday nights - these are themed with different entertainments - you can find it at 373 Commercial Road, in Stepney, E1 (adjacent to the George Tavern). Check out Ron's website on www.ronstorme.com to find out more, or the info line on 020 8788 4154.

Where to get made up:
If you are in search of your favourite treacle and cucumber face pack, then you might check out the salon called 'Pop-In' which is advertised in the 'TV/TS News' (mentioned below), and which welcomes TVs, TSs and drag queens. I have no idea if it is any good, but here are the services they currently advertise: full range of hair, beauty and wig services, also waxing, tanning, shower and changing facilities. What more could a girl want - except a make-up consultant at £20 per hour. Tel (0)20 7735 4371. It is at 6 Cleaver St, Kennington SE11. Probably best to ring in advance to check out times and what is currently on offer.

Where to fill your wardrobe (and empty your wallet?):
If you only take size 12 shoe (for mainland Europeans, that equates to an elephant), and just can't find a decent pair of 6 inch stilettos  anywhere, then you should be in luck at 'Doreen Fashions'. According to Doreen's advert in 'TV/TS News' (see below), she purports to have everything for the smart woman's wardrobe'. So unless you cultivate a scruffy-unkempt-slut look, it is probably worth checking out. You can choose from Betty's range of coats, dresses, underwear, shoes and accessories - and of course stiletto's up to 12's. Hmmm, seems pretty irresistible. Doreen is open 0930-1830 Mon to Sat and sometimes 1000-1600 on Sun - but she suggests you should ring to confirm. You can find Doreen at 644 Lea Bridge Rd, Bakers Arms, London E10. Where to get more information

  • TV TS News: this is a newsletter published in the UK. It is usually out on the shelf (along with other leaflets and fliers) at First Out Cafe-Bar (see my separate reviews of First Out  under 'Where to Eat' and 'Gay bars') and also at Teds Place (see under Raunchy Venues). It seems pretty comprehensive and includes details of special events, personal adverts, adverts  for services (e.g. dressing services etc) and a comprehensive list of venues and help-lines throughout the country.  The newsletter also has the following contacts which may be useful:
    Telephone (0)20 7609 1093
    Fax (0)20 7609 6910
    E-mail:  [email protected]
    Web http://www.crag.dircon.co.uk/news
  • London helpline: (0)20 8333 7392 (before 9pm)
