FROM EARTH TO FURLON

EARTH Legendary destination of the lost Thirteenth Tribe of Kobol. Adama decided to make Earth the goal of the fleet in the hope that the Colonials will find a home and allies against the Cylons there (P). A mysterious, silent prisoner on Proteus painted Earth’s solar system on his cell wall (LP). The Light Beings implanted the course to Earth in the minds of Apollo, Starbuck, and Sheba (WG). Apollo decided to bring the Lunar Seven shuttle aboard the Galactica because he and Starbuck believed that it might be from Earth. When asked by Apollo, Michael admitted that he’d heard Terra referred to as ‘earth’ (GE). The Colonials believed that Terra might be Earth until John informed Apollo otherwise (ET).

EASTERN ALLIANCE A fascist culture that is fighting the Nationalists for control of the planet Terra and its colonies and moon bases (GE), they believe that they are destined to rule the universe (BE). After capturing all of the Nationalist colonies and moon bases the Eastern Alliance launched a surprise nuclear attack on the Nationalists, which was fortunately intercepted by the Galactica. The Eastern Alliance was forced to sue for peace (ET).

EASTERN ALLIANCE DESTROYER An elegantly evil-looking spacecraft with a long nose, fins, and F-15 style intakes along the fuselage. The interior is cramped and reminiscent of a U-boat. The Destroyer may well be the largest type of Terran spacecraft since the escapees from Lunar Seven and the Alliance Enforcers cannot believe the enormous size of the Galactica (GE, BE). The model itself is visibly ‘trash-bashed’ from F-15 model kits and other bits, but still handsome.

EDEN According to Adama, the largest city on Kobol and the first to fall during the troubles which preceded the Exodus of the tribes. The city the Colonials explore may have been Eden, though Adama never said for certain that it was (LG).

EDICT OF EXTERMINATION The Cylon final solution, the declaration of genocide against the humans. Not used in the series, but it is included on the production team’s terminology sheet.

ELECTRO-IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM Amongst the equipment Charka ordered turned off so Commander Kronus’ shuttle couldn’t home in on it, Charka ordered it turned back on one centon before the Celestra got within communications range of the fleet. Presumably this is a system that enables Colonial ships to identify and track one another (TC).

ELECTRONIC DEFENSE SHIELDS When the Pegasus moved in to attack three Cylon base ships, Commander Cain ordered her electronic defense shields to maximum power. Presumably these help ward off enemy laser weapons and possibly confuse enemy missiles as well (LL).

ELECTRONIC MAINTENANCE SCAN As an excuse for visiting the Celestra to see Aurora, Starbuck claimed that his viper needed an electronic maintenance scan because his long-range scanner was acting up (TC).

ELIAS (Newell Alexander) One of the three men Ortega was engaged in blackmailing, like Rifkis and Karibdis he had bribed Ortega to let him board the Rising Star on the night of the Cylon attack on Caprica (MR).

EMBEZZLER 10 Prisoner “down the block” from Starbuck, according to Assault 9 (LP).

ENERGIZER Generator. Adama planned to trade an energizer to the Serenity farmers in exchange for seed and had to find a civilian one since a military energizer would have had revealing markings. Siress Belloby’s energizer was made on Orion (MW). When the Galactica caught fire after the Cylon kamikaze attack, one of her main energizers was knocked out, making the task of fighting the fires even more difficult (FS).

ENERGY EXCHANGE PUMP Part of the Ravashol pulsar. Dr. Ravashol informed Apollo that if the energy exchange pump could be jammed the pulsar would blow itself up. Croft and Leda set charges to destroy the pump, and the gun blew itself off the mountain (GI).

ENFORCER (Rob Hathaway) One of the Enforcers on Proteus, he gave Starbuck his ambrosa ration. Rob Hathaway is Noah Hathaway’s father.

ENFORCERS Hereditary warders of the penal colony on Proteus, descended from the original jailers. They wear uniforms and white helmets and carry sidearms. Not to be confused with Alliance Enforcers.

EN MASSE Adama informed Cain that the base ships that had been harassing the Pegasus were after the fleet en masse (LL). Proof that the Colonials speak French, as well as Italian (prima donna) and Latin (Protector pro tem and Terra).

EPSILON QUADRANT Location of the mysterious void, according to Lucifer (LG).

EPISTLE Letter. Baltar sent an epistle to Imperious Leader suggesting that he was best suited to hunt down the surviving humans (LG).

EQUELLUS The planet on which the events of “The Lost Warrior” take place, located in the Hatari sector. While the planet seemed not to be familiar to Apollo, the general area had been the site of previous Colonial/Cylon battles, in one of which Martin was shot down. The impression given by planets like Equellus, Sectar, Proteus, and Attila seen in the early part of the series is that there were a number of human settlements in the vicinity of the Twelve Colonies with which contact was lost during the early parts of the Thousand Yahren War.

EQUINUS’ ATRUM Apollo referred to himself thus (MN). Obviously Colonialese for “horse’s ass.” I suspect ABC censors may have mutilated this term since the word “astrum” was used by Cain and would fit here, i.e. “Equinus’ astrum.”

ERGON A Colonial measurement of energy. Dr. Wilker performed a test that measured how many ergons of energy Starbuck’s laser expended and how much energy the body of Ortega absorbed. Unfortunately for Starbuck, each measured 683.947182 ergons (MR).

EXECUTIVE OFFICER Second in command. Colonel Tigh is the executive officer of the Galactica; Colonel Tolen was the executive officer of the Pegasus.

EXODUS The migration of the Twelve Tribes from Kobol; also the departure of the survivors from the destruction of the Colonies.

FACTOR FOUR Top speed of the Celestra, according to Commander Kronus (TC).

FARNES, CONSTABLE (Rance Howard) Constable of Serenity killed by the Borays (MW). Evidently another sucker conned into the job by Sire Bogan and Dipper.

FATHER-CREATOR Respectful term used by the clones on Arkta to refer to Dr. Ravashol (GI).

FEDERAL GARRISON Josh Morland expressed astonishment that Michael and his family managed to get past the Federal Garrison in their escape from Lunar Seven. Obviously the Nationalists are just as interested as the Eastern Alliance in keeping the populace under control and ignorant (GE).

FELGERCARB A popular Colonial expletive.

FIFTH FLEET Cain’s command at the Battle of Molecay, probably a battlestar fleet of two or three ships plus their escorts and auxiliaries. The Pegasus was the only ship of the Fifth Fleet to escape the Cylon ambush, rescuing some of the crews of the other ships in the process (LL).

FIGHTER, ENFORCER’S In appearance, a sleek one-man fighter reminiscent of an early viper; a sixth millennium fighter, according to Starbuck. It has two engines instead of three and its wings are horizontal. It is fitted with two pulsar cannon. It is similar to some of the early Apogee viper designs, and was very probably based on them (LP).

FIGHTER PATROL ONE Starbuck and Apollo’s patrol during which Apollo was very nearly lost in the magnetic void (LG).

FIGHTER PATROL TWO Boomer and Jolly’s patrol during which they discover a Cylon asteroid outpost and also contract the deadly disease that infected the Galactica’s pilots.

FINITE LASER EXTRACTOR Medical device used by Cassiopiea to help determine whether Starbuck and Chameleon are related, it extracts the holographic image of a single neuro cell (MN).

FINITE MICROLASER A surgical tool used by Dr. Salik when he operates on Adama (FS).

FIRELEADER (William Bryant) Head of the Galactica’s damage control teams, he leads the firefighting effort after the Cylon kamikaze attack (FS).

FIRST ORBIT CADET A term used frequently in early BG episodes to refer to rookies.

FLASH INSPECTION When caught by Starbuck and Boomer in the act of “borrowing” uniforms from their bunkroom, Colonel Tigh covered himself by claiming that it wasn’t the last “flash inspection” he’d make (P).

FLEET COMLINE ALPHA The scrambler communications channel between warships. Adama was quite surprised when a message came in over Fleet Comline Alpha, but the message turned out to be from the Pegasus (LL).

FLEET DAMAGE AND SUPPLY SURVEY A survey to check the condition of the ships that escaped from the Colonies, tally their supplies, and presumably take a census of the survivors. Apollo, Boomer, and Starbuck were assigned to Fleet Damage and Supply Survey when they inspect the freighter Gemini (P).

FLEET PERSONNEL COMPUTER Central data bank for information about the people, military and civilian, in the fleet. Apollo checked the Fleet Personnel Computer for information about Karibdis, but found he was not listed. When he threatened to check Chella’s records, he had to admit that he wasn’t listed either (MR). When Starbuck expressed surprise that Aurora was alive she huffily informed him that her name was in the personnel computer, but he hadn’t thought to check as he believed she had been killed on Caprica (TC).

FLIGHT LEADER SERPENTINE Cylon centurion who reported to Imperious Leader that some humans had escaped from the holocaust (P).

FORCED NITRON FIELD A form of hyper-fertilization farming. When asked by Sire Bogan what he did for a living, Starbuck replied that he and his father run a big forced nitron field in the next quadrant (MW).

FORCEFIELD The cells in the Nationalist brig where Apollo, Stone, Brenda, and later General Maxwell were incarcerated were blocked off from the corridor by a deadly forcefield (ET).

FORGER 7 (Ian Abercrombie) Another of the prisoners on Proteus, a stereotypically slippery-looking type with peculiar round, lavender-tinted spectacles (LP).

FOUR POINT PEEL-OFF Maneuver Bojay ordered his flight to perform when the Ship of Lights came up behind them; presumably a rehearsed formation-breaking maneuver that would ensure clean separation of the ships and minimize chances of collision (WG).

FOURTH FLEET Former command of Commander Kronus, he said it consisted of 600 fighting ships, which number presumably includes everything from battlestars down to vipers (TC).

FOWLER, JOHN RUSSELL Sarah’s father, he built a ranch on Paradeen where his family could live free of the Eastern Alliance. He died before Sarah and Michael arrived and was buried by the two androids in a neat fenced grave under a cross (GE).

FRACK A popular Colonial expletive.

FREE FLIGHT JUMP Parachute drop. The assault team thus dropped into the middle of the Cylon base on Gamoray (LL).

FRESH PROTEIN A hideous-looking substance that evidently is a great delicacy for the Colonials. Starbuck regretfully informed Athena that the Rising Star’s kitchens were all out of fresh protein, but she was just as happy with mushies, fortunately, since the fresh protein was with Cassiopeia in other private dining room (LP).

FRUIT JUICE In deference to Boxey’s youth, the pilot’s mugs were filled with fruit juice rather than ale when he played cards with them (LW). Giles in particular was unimpressed with this choice of beverage.

FUMARELLO Cigar. After rescuing Apollo from the void, Starbuck informed him that he owed him a fumarello (LG). Starbuck asked Chameleon if he’d ever smoked fumarellos, but apparently Chameleon doesn’t smoke (MN).

FUMARELLO CASE Protective case to keep a fumarello fresh. Boomer used one to put a message in and attached it to Muffit’s collar (FS).

FURLON Military time off (FS, MN). The original title of The Man With Nine Lives was The Furlon.
