IBLIS TO KYLE

IBLIS, COUNT (Patrick Macnee) A charming, suave ‘man’ discovered by Apollo, Starbuck and Sheba near the wreckage of a huge spacecraft on a strange planet. Believing him a castaway, possibly confused by his experiences, they took him back to the fleet where he began to perform ‘miracles,’ such as psychokinetically moving a table lamp and supposedly turning Baltar over to the Council of Twelve (when Baltar had actually come of his own free will to confer with Adama over the manifestations associated with Iblis). Iblis also claimed to have been to Earth. Baltar recognized Iblis’ voice as that of the Cylon Imperious Leader, suggesting it was Iblis who caused the mechanical Cylons to rise up and destroy their reptilian makers. Sent to get scans of him, two medtechs returned with broken scanners and Cassiopiea with a blank tape. Iblis has mental powers that include the ability to read minds, influence others, and apparently even take control of other’s bodies, as he may have done with Boomer during a Triad match. Iblis’ goal was to convince the people of the fleet to turn the leadership of the fleet over to him. Adama theorized that Iblis is a fallen angel who must coerce, not force, people into following him. Apollo and Starbuck returned to the planet where Iblis had been found to investigate his crashed ship, and in it found the body of a demon. Apollo confronted Iblis and when Iblis attempted to kill Sheba, who had become his prime acolyte, Apollo stepped in the way and died. Starbuck shot Iblis with his laser but the weapon had no effect except to change Iblis into what might be his true formclick to see the true form of Count Iblis. Iblis then vanished, making malevolent threats and promises to return. Apollo was returned to life by the Light Beings since Iblis was not permitted to kill a nonfollower (WG).
spacer.gif (836 bytes)In the Muslim tradition, Iblis is the name given to Satan, and indeed Captain Apollo refers to Iblis as the “Prince of Darkness.”

ICE STATION KALPA Ice station commanded by Croft, where he, Thane, Leda, and Wolfe served (GI).

ICE STATION THOLA Ice station where Boomer pulled a tour (GI)

ICE STATION ZEBRA by Alistair MacLean.

IFB InterFleet Broadcasting. A TV network headquartered aboard the Comp-tel Ship. One of their most popular programs is “Warrior of the Centare,” where they feature one of the Galactica’s crew (MN). They also broadcast recruiting advertisements (MN) and Triad games (MR).

IL or I-L CLASS CYLONS Cybernetic aides of Cylon commanders, the ILs are sentient mobile computers. Lucifer, Baltar’s aide, is an IL and proud of it, as is the ‘older model’ Specter, the garrison commander on Attila (YL). ILs are tall, slender beings who wear brightly colored robes that leave only their heads exposed. Their heads have a vaguely human face with two eye sockets in which the typical red Cylon scanners ooze back and forth, occasionally slightly out of synch. The pointed tops of their heads are transparent to reveal flashing circuitry. ILs are devious and often sarcastic, but useful and charming nonetheless. In addition to Lucifer and Specter, several unnamed ILs were seen on Gamoray (LL).
spacer.gif (836 bytes)“IL” supposedly stands for “Imperious Leader series,” but actually stands for “Industrial Light & Magic,” the original George Lucas SFX firm that BG effects wizard John Dykstra founded.

click to see a picture of IlaILA Adama’s wife, mother of Apollo, Athena, and Zac, killed in the holocaust (P). Adama used to drive her to distraction by bending tableware during his time working on parapsychological research at the Colonial Military Institute (WG). Her picture shows a blonde woman who looks somewhat younger than Adama, but since Colonials presumably age differently from us it’s impossible to know if there was any considerable difference in their ages.

IM Button on the viper’s control stick used to control reverse thrust (LG, LW). Another veiled reference to Industrial Light & Magic.

IMPERIOUS LEADER “His Eminence our Imperious Leader” (LL) is head of all the Cylons. He is a remarkably ugly creature apparently modeled after the original reptilian Cylons, with flattened head and bug eyes. He wears a red robe and tends to perch atop an immensely high pedestal. Imperious Leader was seen three times during the series; in the premiere, where he was killed when his base ship was caught in the explosion of Carillon, in “Lost Planet of the Gods,” where his replacement pardoned Baltar and sent him in pursuit of the Colonials, and in “Living Legend,” where he arrived to dedicate the new Cylon sector capital of Gamoray just in time for the Colonials to blow the pogees out of it.
spacer.gif (836 bytes)The voice of Imperious Leader was provided by actor Patrick Macnee, better known as John Steed of The Avengers, and also as Count Iblis, while actor Dick Durock (who started out as just another centurion but was promoted to ‘head lizard’ by Glen Larson) was in the costume.

INDUSTRY SHIPS Commander Adama appointed Commander Kronus Executive Commander of the three industry ships, which comprise the Textile Ship, the Parts Ship, and the Celestra (TC).

INNER PLANETS The first Colonies attacked by the Cylons; Virgon, Sagitara, and Caprica (P).

INSTRUCTIONAL PERIOD School (GE).

INTERCEPT ONE Viper Starbuck took off in to investigate the scanner trace behind the Galactica in the void; this was actually Apollo’s assigned viper (LG).

INTERCEPT TWO Viper Apollo took off in in pursuit of Starbuck, meant to be Serina’s assigned viper. The viper Serina took off in in pursuit of the two men evidently did not have a special designation (LG).

INTERFLEET ORBIT BETA A regular shuttle route within the fleet (MN).

ION TRAIL Commander Kronus suggests that Apollo try to find the Celestra by following her ion trail, but Apollo points out that they don’t have enough fuel to do so, and so must attempt an interception course (TC). Evidently a form of emission from a ship’s engines that can be detected and tracked.

IRIS CONE COUNT Another test used to determine ancestry (MN).

JASON (Jay Donohue) A friend or perhaps hired hand of Bootes, he informed Vela that Lacerta’s goons had taken half of Bootes’ ovines as tribute and that Bootes was on his way to town, angry (LW).

JELLY BEANS Jelly beans were used rather than cubits when the pilots played pyramid with Boxey. Starbuck couldn’t resist eating part of his own bet (LW).

JOHN (Edward Mulhare) John is one of the ‘angels’ from the Ship of Lights. He took on human form, ‘protected’ Apollo, and sent him to save the Terrans from destruction at their own hands. John comes across as sort of an intergalactic busybody who needs to coerce others into doing his dirty work since he has no physical form outside the Ship of Lights—which would seem to be either a lie on his part or a scriptwriting slip, since Iblis is one of the Beings (or used to be) and clearly has physical form (ET).

JOLLY, FLIGHT SERGEANT/LIEUTENANT (Tony Swartz) Jolly is a likable, somewhat overweight pilot in Blue Squadron. He was one of the warriors held back from attending the awards ceremony on Carillon and helped rescue people escaping from the casino (P). Later, while investigating a Cylon asteroid outpost, he and Boomer contracted a strange disease and transmitted it to the other pilots attending Apollo’s bachelor party (LG). He accompanied the mission to Sectar and was detailed to watch Boxey and guard the shuttle while the others went off adventuring, lucky man. He had earlier saved the sole remaining agro ship by destroying the Cylon fighter attacking it (MW). Jolly was one of the first pilots to be taken by the Ship of Lights (WG). Evidently a very good friend of Starbuck, who commented after his disappearance that Jolly was “almost like a kinsman” to him. Evidently Jolly was promoted to commissioned rank sometime before the arrival of the Lunar Seven refugees, as Sire Geller refers to him as “Lieutenant” (GE).

KARIBDIS Baltar’s pilot and electronics expert, code-named Proteus, tall, dark haired, left-handed. Baltar claimed that their relationship was like that of a father and son. Karibdis sabotaged the defense computers on Caprica the night of the holocaust. Presumed killed in the attack, he actually bribed his way aboard the Rising Star, assuming the name Pallon. He and the other two men who bribed Ortega for their passage were blackmailed by him, even though Ortega seemed to have realized the danger of playing games with Pallon, whose real identity he knew; he told his wingman, Flight Sergeant Barton, that Karibdis was the only person with enough courage to kill him—as he indeed did. Karibdis murdered Ortega with Starbuck’s sidearm, hoping to frame Starbuck for the act. Later, Karibdis stowed away on Apollo’s shuttle with the thought of murdering Apollo and Baltar, thus disposing of the only other people in the fleet who were aware of his true identity. After Apollo picked up Baltar from the Prison Barge, Karibdis revealed himself, and Baltar learned that he planned to kill not just Apollo but also him. Baltar knocked Karibdis down with his shackles, giving Apollo the opening he needed to stun him. In the meantime, Karibdis, in the glorious tradition of video villains everywhere, had Told All over the open channel to the Tribunal, and so Starbuck was acquitted of Ortega’s murder, for which we can assume Karibdis is paying the price (MR).

K-BISCUIT A Colonial ration. Apparently never used in the series, but included on the production team’s official terminology sheet.

KILLIAN (Patrick Milholland) The pilot who flew escort for the shuttle taking the assault team to Arkta. While protecting the shuttle from attacking raiders, his viper was destroyed by the Ravashol pulsar. Judging from Adama’s reaction to his death, Killian must have been an experienced, valuable, and evidently well-liked pilot (GI).

KILOMETERS Measure of distance used by the Terrans, and also on Earth. Crewman Krebbs reported to Commandant Leiter that the Lunar Seven ship was 20,0000 kilometers from the destroyer (GE).

KILON A Colonial measurement of power output. Boomer informed Dipper that the output of Siress Belloby’s energizer was 5000 kilons.

KINSMAN A relative. When Jolly vanished, taken by the Ship of Lights, Starbuck said that Jolly was like a kinsman to him (WG).

KLAXON Alert siren.

KOBOL The planet “where all life began,” according to the Book of the Word. Now a dead world, Kobol was the origin place of the Colonial civilization. When the people knew Kobol was dying (judging from Adama’s comments, from a self-induced ecological disaster), they colonized the Twelve Worlds, plus the missing Thirteenth Colony, Earth. Kobol is now a desert planet orbiting a variable star, with only crumbling ruins left to mark the remains of a once-proud civilization.

KOBOL, ELDERS OF Historic personages mentioned in the Book of the Word. Apollo informed Starbuck that they had “some very young wives” (LL).

click for a picture of Commander Adama visiting the Ninth Lord's tombKOBOL, LORDS OF Rulers of ancient Kobol, who have assumed the status of religious figures. Adama, Apollo, and Serina explored the tomb of the Ninth Lord of Kobol (LG).

KOMMA, CORPORAL (Jeff MacKay) Corporal Komma is a confident young computer tech aboard the Galactica who knows everything about computers from “alpha input to omega readout.” He doesn’t know much about the wily Starbuck, however, and was easily decoyed into leaving the computer room when Starbuck wanted to include his own name on the mission roster for Arkta (GI). He appeared briefly in Life Center after the Cylon kamikaze attack, in somewhat used condition after trying, with other personnel, to fight the fire and rescue the crewmen trapped in the Rejuvenation Center (FS), and helped Apollo and Boomer when they visited the Galactica’s computers to inquire about Karibdis. Jeff MacKay is yet another veteran of Baa Baa Black Sheep who appeared in BG.

KREBBS (Kurt Lowens) A crewman aboard the Eastern Alliance Destroyer, he brought Michael’s ship and its escorting vipers to the attention of Commandant Leiter (GE).

KRILLIAN STAR SYSTEM Gamoray appears to occupy a strategic location within the Krillian Star System, judging from Imperious Leader’s remarks when dedicating the new Cylon base there (LL).

KRONUS, COMMANDER (Paul Fix) A distinguished Colonial military leader who rose from the ranks to become commander of the battlestar Rycon and the Fourth Fleet. He retired not long before the holocaust but came out of retirement to take command of the repair ship Celestra. The Council of Twelve put him in overall command of the three industry ships and awarded him the Distinguished Service Medallion for his post-holocaust contributions. A tough, strict officer, Kronus was misunderstood by his civilian crew, who thought they were mutinying against him when it was actually his ambitious executive officer Charka who was responsible for their misery. Kronus was mortally wounded recapturing the Celestra and was eulogized by Adama as “a man who lived in pursuit of excellence.” Commander Kronus was buried in space (TC).

KYLE (Charles Bloom) Egotistical adolescent son of Megan on Attila, tall, thin, blond, wearing a costume thrown together out of dead animal bits, he found the presence of Starbuck, a trained and experienced combat warrior, a threat to his leadership of the other children. Partly to free his father but mostly, one suspects, to get rid of Starbuck, he decided to “trade Starbuck to the tincans for Father,” a deal the Cylons naturally reneged on. Fortunately, at the last instant Starbuck had been able to convince him that the Cylons would doublecross him, so all the Cylons got was Starbuck’s uniform stuffed with hay. After that fiasco Kyle relinquished command to Starbuck and generally behaved himself for the rest of the episode. One does wonder, however, how Kyle keeps his feathers clean in all that mud (YL).
