Hyperevolution Organism Data Sheet

Plant Procoon

KINGDOM: Animalia
PHYLUM/DIVISION: Chordata
CLASS: Mammalia
GENUS/SPECIES: Procyon plantus
COMMON NAME: Plant Procoon
BASE ORGANISM: Racoon
ORIGINAL NICHE: Rodent Scavenger
CHARACTERISTICS OF ORIGINAL ORGANISM: 20 pounds, 20-30 inches in length, brown with grey and black stripes on eyes and tail, small sharp teeth, often washes food before eating
NEW NICHE: Land Herbivore
ADAPTATIONS OF ORGANISM TO NEW NICHE: These raccoons have evolved due to the loss of deer, and the abundance of producers/plants. They needed stronger and sharper teeth to shred plants, and chew harder ones. They gained longer, slimmer, and bonier legs, to reach higher plants and run faster to get away from predators, sharper ears to hear approaching and sneaking predators, and more of a camouflage color to its coat to blend in as a defense mechanism.
BIOME TYPE/HABITAT: Temperate Deciduous Forest
NUTRTION: insects, small fish, all plants and berries
ORGANISM INTERACTIONS: groups of 5-15 procoons can be seen eating the same vegetation and they are rarely seen alone, prey to large birds or mammals, often too fast to be caught by predators
BEHAVIOR: breed during late winter, 4-6 pups are born (different from the procoon because of size), pups are fed through mother's milk, males have little or no part in raising offspring, pups will stay with mother for several months.
