Joyce Glassman was born in 1935 and grew up in Queens, New York. She moved to West 116th Street when she was 8 years old. At the age of 13, she began rebelling against her parents, making illicit trips to Washington Square. She fell short of a B.A. at Barnard College after being overwhelmed by a love affair with her instructor. This was when she decided to leave home. She wrote her first novel in 1955 at the age of 20. She became fascinated with the Beats and found her way to them through her friend Elise Cowen (Elise and Allen Ginsberg had a brief relationship in 1952). In 1957, Ginsberg arranged a blind date between 21-year-old Joyce and 34-year-old Jack Kerouac. She has written several books, a few about Jack Kerouac.
