Also known as Imanu Amiri Baraka, he was born Everett LeRoi Jones on October 7th, 1934 in Newark, New Jersey. In 1961, he graduated from Howard University and published his first collection of poetry that same year. He has also written several plays and produced many performances. In 1965, Baraka founded The Black Arts Repertory Theatre in Harlem, New York. Three years later, he formed a Muslim group whose purpose was to affirm black culture and help African-Americans to gain power in politics. The group was called the Black Community Development and Defense Organization. He is known best for his writings and works having to do with African-American experiences.
